Re: Last minute permits for may

Wednesday, Thursday and maybe Friday might be good. The Weekend could be tough, but you could get lucky. Be flexible. Bright Angel Campground might be booked, but consider going a little farther to Cottonwood. Or carrying extra water from Phantom Ranch and going up and out on Clear Creek to dry camp...

Re: Advice for a greenhorn

Are you interested in 15 days of actual hiking or would you be okay with 10 days of hiking and 5 days of driving? Are you more interested in desert areas (Tucson, Phoenix and the Supersitions) or mountains, forests and Reservation (Flagstaff, Grand Canyon and the Reservation)? Is photography extreme...

Re: Is there a story or reasoning for your username?

Back when I chose my name HAZ did not support עִבְרִית or ويكيبيديا العربية so I opted for this moniker. Al is the definitive article in ويكيبيديا العربية it basically means “the”. It is common in many ويكيبيديا العربية names to denote the place a person is from or the occupation of a person. “hikes...

Re: I LOVE MY REI DIVIDEND!

A lot of my purchases this year were "Nondividendable". Maybe I'm getting wiser in my old age. There are still a lot of things that I want, but not much that I truly "need". Unless I lose a hiking pole at Bryce. I am still over $1.63 because I buy gifts - mostly headlamps, flashl...

Re: overheating in 110-degree-plus heat

Who find 110 far easier to hike in than +10? Or -10, for that matter. I do. Heat is a lot better than cold. My motor runs hot, so I sweat A LOT!! "Dry and cold", I can handle -10, "Wet and cold" - I struggle. The trick in both extreme heat or cold is to slow down. As Cody Lundin...

Re: overheating in 110-degree-plus heat

This article says 1 gallon of water...NOT enough in 100-degree-plus heat. More like 1 liter/hour/person in those conditions, wouldn't you agree? At four hours, those come out to the same thing (he did say one gallon per person). Probably not too many people willingly exceed four hours in those cond...

Your event sounds more like a gravitational distortion than a geologic event.

Re: Missing from Peralta 2/16

News reported this am about a woman that was reported missing from the same trail head. Also reported that she was the same woman that went missing back in Dec. looking for the Lost Dutchmans gold. I feel like I've had this conversation before, just buy a pack of tampons from the dollar store, those things burn like champs! And they're lightweight. And they're great for nosebleeds. :D They are great for just about everything. We have a thread on the Swiss Army Survival Tampon. http://hikeariz...

Re: Using trekking/hiking poles ...

I was told by someone that holding them that way also makes it less likely to snap your wrist, should you fall. Were they blowing smoke? That could be true, when held properly the poles do seem to fall out of the way as you brace for landing with your hands. If you are worried about it, you might w...
