Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

We got hammered this morning in the gulf with t-storms ahead of the front with 60 knot winds and are getting hit again with 50 knot winds offshore (higher in Grand Isle and Fourchon. My wife woke up to 5 inches of snow yesterday at our house. :y:

Re: Devil's Chasm - Dog Friendly?

I haven't taken my dog up there, but have done the hike numerous times. I would advise against it. :M2C: I have the advantage of having a dog small enough and willing to ride on my shoulders. (30 lb.) There are sharp plants along the way especially if you end up using an alternate path up. The slick...

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

Walked to a packed town hall meeting last night on Flash flood mitigation due to the Waldo Fire burn scar and the sediments washing down the north side of the 24. Actually very interesting and enlightening. It was just starting to snow. Still snowing when I got up this am. My wife texted me she beat...

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

@SuperstitionGuy
I heard they got some snow. They were predicting 8-16" from the same storm in Cascade Co., but it was a big dud. My wife said we got a dusting and the roads were completely dry in Ute Pass and on the way to work in the Springs today. Be safe with the trip to Az.

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

We got snow the last two days. I know Denver did as well. Dry enough to sweep instead of shovel. :y: 6-10 inches in the last 48 hours. I might get unpacking, recurrent pre course work in and still get some turns. :D

Re: BUFFALO!!!

@Jim_H
Saw it on the menu in the brewery we ate at down the mountain from the new digs. Used to get it pretty regularly in Oregon when it was on sale. :)

Re: Moving to Casa Grande/Phoenix/Kayenta/Anywhere

Re: What do you do for a living??

@fotogirl53
My wife is an SLP. :) She just took a transfer with her company so we're heading to Colorado. So technically your not the only one, but she does not know her login and only is logged on hikes she does with me so you probably are technically the only one. :sl:

Re: What do you do for a living??

I work in the hairy gangrenous big toe of the US called Louisana. I get paid to do a variety of things from sleeping to walking in circles to turtle watching to keep them from being blown up by oil companies. I transport all sorts of things from cigarettes and Cajuns to radioactive hazmat all so you...

Re: Devil's Chasm featured in Backpacker this month

There has been significant damage from the first time I visited to my last visit last year. The same is true maybe even more so for Pueblo Canyon and Roger's Canyon. For some reason people recently think it's cool to camp in them and build fires against the fragile several hundred year old walls. :g...

Re: Moving to Casa Grande/Phoenix/Kayenta/Anywhere

@ big_load She starts March 4th. It's going to be a busy 6 weeks. Don't exactly know what were going to do with the house at this point, (rent/sell/hold onto it until we can break even) but everything has a way of working out. We'll probably rent until we can find a house and get to know the area. S...

Re: Sufferthon...

You might want to hook up with this ER doc in Portland (unfortunately I'm spacing his name right now). He's done Everest a couple times, but he has also summited Mt. Hood over 300 times from Timberline lodge his record was 1hr. 24 min. with track cleats. He borrowed a 10 speed from a friend and peda...

Re: Devil's Chasm, AZ :: Question by Alexvazquez

I've done it numerous times including attempts from above. Everything everyone has said is accurate. I found more of a trail than previous visits when jjiii and I visited. This time of year snow and ice on the steep sections and waterfalls are going to be the issue. The visitation has increased over...

Re: The 2012 self propelled totals thread.

@Patrick L I have pulled a few cacti out on occasion, but have yet to puncture anything wearing fivefingers that has created lasting damage. I don't know if it's luck or foot placement as I have put a lot of miles on minimalist shoes over the last 3+ years. I agree with Jim in so far as I have had ...

Re: Biotite stove

My dad was asking me about stoves because he wanted something lighter than his Sierra Zip Stove which is basically, the Biotite w/out the charging capability, for his summer biking trip of the Lewis and Clark trail adventure. I did some searching and found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pajkt5...

Re: Blisters

Merino wool toe socks under toe shoes (VFF). Haven't had a blister or hotspot since I started wearing the socks particularly after I put several hundred miles on a pair of shoes as the inner lining tends to wear faster without socks. I do however rarely have a full set of toenails. :sl: It's an acqu...
