Re: Fire destroys historic Marble Canyon Lodge

Holy cow. I've stayed there several times, and I stopped by there just this past weekend. That's sad.

Re: California & New Mexico Fires

Looks like the Silver Fire is still going strong, with conditions expected to continue to be hot, dry and windy today.

Re: Doce Fire-Prescott N.F.

Smoke can drift a very long way. Today at lunchtime it was nice and clear, hot and breezy, here in Eagar. At 2 p.m. break we went outside, and we were asking each other, "Where's the fire?" because of the haze and smell. At 4 p.m. I got off work, the smell of smoke was very, very strong, a...

Re: REI to Open in Flagstaff

I like TJ's, just complaining they have altered their coffee aisle quite a bit over the past 15 years or so. I like the cereals, salads, nuts and dry fruits, etc., etc. They are cheaper than that New Frontiers place that's in Flagstaff, and I think they are also cheaper than a lot of other health fo...

Re: REI to Open in Flagstaff

I wonder what the Trader Joe's fiasco was all about? I have a friend in Yuma who contacted Trader Joe's when she heard they were thinking of locating in Flagstaff, to ask "why not Yuma?" which is a larger city, especially in the winter. I guess Yuma isn't very high on their snobby yuppie &...

Re: Section Hiking AZT. Need partner(s)

I'm interested in the Kaibab Plateau passages at the moment. Not sure when I'll have time, though.

Re: Looks like the shoe tree on Beeline got whacked.

I never notice these things. There's an arrow tree south of here, south of Hannagan on 191 somewhere. I've never actually seen it. People shoot arrows into it. Or, maybe it burned in one of the many fires?

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

Drizzled a bit between Holbrook and St. Johns today on my way home from the Canyon. Washed all the Kaibab dust off the vehicle!

Re: Current info of the trail - Havasupai

Basically, if you show up down there, they'll be happy to relieve you of some cash. At least, that is what I've always heard.

Re: REI to Open in Flagstaff

There are at least 4 backpacking outfitters in Flag: Aspen, Babbitt's, Four Seasons, and Peace. I would expect they are concerned.

Re: US 89 to Page is closed....

I was just by that area today and also on Friday. Sure is a lot of truck activity, and a big cement plant has gone up at Gap. Some people seemed worried that the road, with only a 4 inch base, will not hold up for long. Truckers are being housed everywhere along 89 from Gray Mountain on up. There mu...

Re: Hutch's Pool Water Level?

Why wouldn't it? It always has water in it. The only time it didn't was after the big fires, it filled up with silt, which has now washed away.

Sure will be a miserable hike to get there and back unless you hike at night. (Just my opinion. Maybe you are one who loves the heat!)

Re: Like to say...

Not sure where to put this, since there are two forums that mention the various types of survey marks. Since I've been hanging out with a surveyor lately, I've learned that not all of these markers are benchmarks. So... I recently created two new culture labels for different types of survey markers...

Re: Easy Rider movie ruins

How about this, where Jack stole the show...what a great actor. Not to mention how completely it captures the particular type of event being portrayed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgiQPdPUNvs

Re: Easy Rider movie ruins

Oh, but didn't Jack just steal the show. especially the pot smoking scene? I seem to recall that was his first major role. Way better actor than either Fonda or Hopper, in my opinion.

I love Jack Nicholson. He is such a rascal!

Re: Moving to Casa Grande/Phoenix/Kayenta/Anywhere

No, I want to get an RV and move around. California first, though. I have family there, and will probably spend fall and winter there.. Back to Arizona, I'd probably switch around from Tucson, Flag and Cottonwood or Camp Verde. We'll see. It's all a dream just now. Definitely not Alamogordo. My dad ...
