Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

Some great clouds over the Sacramento Plateau this evening. I went nuts posting some pics I took.

Re: Exotic plants, oaks specifically

As I am certain all HAZ members care deeply on this subject, I shall report on it further. Went to the movie theater in town the other day and observed that quite a few Overcup Oaks were planted in the islands in the parking lot, when it was built several years ago. There were some other tree specie...

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

Curious that this spring period of March-April-May has followed an unscientifically noticed pattern of what ever emerges early will not last, and the early indications are often false indications. Actually, the same can be said of the winter period of December-January and February. In both phases, w...

Re: Hiking vehicles

Searched the thread and only found 2 mentions of Subarus, none for the Forester. Curiously, one considers their Subaru to be a female. If that is the case, anyone know of where I can find a suitable male Subaru to mate with their female? Stud fees can be negotiated. Seriously though, anyone have any...

Re: Philomena Spring in the S.F. Peaks

Bump. Anyone considering a visit? I bet flow is great right now, though cold. Should you travel above the spring, be careful of the tundra veg.

Re: Exotic plants, oaks specifically

Turns out those oaks planted by the bank are Overcup Oaks, not Burr Oaks. They look very similar, but they lack the corky ridges on the twigs, the burr projections on the acorn, and the leaves are a little different. I'm surprised they look as good as they do, planted where they are planted. Basical...

Re: Suggestions?Remote Memorial Day Backpacking (3 day, 2 ni

Do a loop in the Gila. No crowds, but hard to get to. Nice time of year to loop to the central parks, if you can get over there.

Re: How do meadows form?

Well, that is good news. Maybe this summer, hopefully before the rains comes, the harvest will begin.

Exotic plants, oaks specifically

I know this is sort of an odd topic, but I had to bring it up. I get palms, and lawns, and citrus, and many of the non-native vegetation planted in the desert and like many, I enjoy it. I also understand and enjoy live oaks being planted in the desert and think they make excellent trees to plant in ...

Re: How do meadows form?

Anyone know if the Forest Service cut those areas around Hart Prairie as expected? Perhaps there are pictures of this, or there is a recent photo set of some of the work?

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

A backdoor cold front has brought a pretty intense thunderstorm to Alamogordo. It has been raining heavily for about 45 minutes, at my house. I consider this very unusual. My guess is at least 1/4 of an inch, perhaps as much as 1/2 an inch, has fallen here in my yard. Hopefully, a similar amount has...

A video explaining the wonderful wind, from my favorite place to live! Includes an image of dust plumes headed to the San Juans, which the 14ers crowd hates, and a time lapse video of the Schultz Smoke.

Re: Commercial development/Tram into Grand Canyon

I expect the actual economic input for the locals will be slim, but the resentment of most local with the increased traffic, the increased presence of outsiders, the increased in-your-face conspicuous consumption of some tourists, and the benefit to certain politically well connected tribal members ...

Re: Hiking vehicles

I need a new vehicle and want to replace my 10 year old Honda Civic which has nearly 160,000 miles on it, with something better suited to my "needs". What can my abilities afford me? Before concerns over destruction to my car on rougher dirt roads crept in, I drove some decent dirt roads, ...

Re: Summer Trip Planning

The weather seems odd this Spring. I was in Tucson last week, and for early May, it seemed cool and windy. Super dusty and hazy the first 3 of the 4 days I was there, and it was chilly up on Mt Lemmon, compared to what I expected. It was hotter in mid-March while there, than last week. To the OP: I ...

Re: Triple Rim to Rim to Rim

I think things are pretty fine the way they are, no need to change the already limited access to the parks. The park is there for humans to enjoy, not to preserve natures masterpiece of erosion. Be it car or bus, access is fine. Only a small area is impacted by visitors, motorized vehicles, and nois...

Re: A new type of danger of Everest

Seems these guys were "elite" climbers (hikers) and even their retreat was a source of bragging; it took them 2.5 hours to do what takes a mortal man all day. I think this was a case of arrogance and a sense of elite entitlement irritating the locals. Who, probably having their fill of the...

Re: Catalinas- Seen any big metal doors?

It's collapsed inside. The trail above looks down into the shafts which are deep and may go far below. Tunnels, you bet, but I'm not going in without a rope
