Re: KEEN shoes/boots

@Trishness
Trish, the Mesa Ventilator was replaced by the Moab Ventilator. They're very similar.

Re: KEEN shoes/boots

You just can't beat the sticking power of the Merrell Moab Ventilators. They're like Spiderman shoes. It's not just the Vibram, but also the more flexible sole that gives you a better grip when you need it the most. I recently bought a pair of Keens for the wider toe box. Comfortable on my foot? Sur...

@SuperstitionGuy
I have a great idea! I'll drive and you can take pictures when you're not busy holding on for dear life. ;) :sl:

Re: largest & tallest saguaros

Another Supes contender: There is another one in the Supes that's reportedly 40' tall and has 42 arms and a girth of 16'. If that's the case, then it should qualify in the National Register as the largest, I would think? It's near W111º 20.140" N 33º 26.060". It's located just off the Blu...

Re: Rockwell Plane Crash near Superstition Peak 5,024

I'm surprised they even found one body. Full fuel @ 200 mph into a vertical rock face = :cry:
I feel so terrible for that poor mother.

Re: Snake Karma: To Kill or Not to Kill

A blanket fear of rattlesnakes comes from ignorance. The deliberate and unprovoked killing of rattlesnakes outside of your personal domain simply because they have the ability (though, not the desire) to best you comes from crippling insecurity. (If you want to impress with a snake kill, put down th...

Re: Dog AND Child Friendly Day trips?!

@joe bartels
I posted some nice photos from Gordon Creek back in '09 under the title "Gordon Canyon Creek" (I thought 'falls' seemed a bit generous). http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=8319
Is there some way you could put my photos under your new listing?

P.S. I feel slighted. ;)

Re: Tabacco products on the trail?

@survivalhike
Good answer!
(I can't imagine heading off into the wilderness with less than all of my brain. It's even better if you can also bring someone else's brain along with you for back up! ;) )

Re: Tabacco products on the trail?

@Tough_Boots
Tonto Natl Forest Fire Restriction Rules allow smoking within a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is cleared of all flammable material.
They do not prohibit all smoking... only careless smoking.

Re: 2 Missing Utah Hiker's Bodies Found in Superstitons

The AJ News article is quite accurate. And, the 3rd body was found less than 100 yards from the other two on Yellow Peak. It is amazing that they were found at all, considering how very few people ever go up there. The bodies were not ravaged by animals, either, which is also surprising.

I never thought there would be any confusion as to my gender before or that I would have the need to label a photo of me as "female". :(

Re: Perfume, cologne, etc. on the trails?

Doesn't all that scented stuff attract animals and insects? I've always read that was a backpacking no-no. Even toothpaste (that you spit out) will attract unwanted company. (use baking soda)

Re: Warning: Galiuro Wilderness/Redfield via Muleshoe Ranch

My bet would go to poachers. Although if they had huge packs on, maybe they had just been out there for a while. I know that when I'm hiking and lost in my own world for hours without anyone else to talk to, I must seem like a weirdo when I finally come across someone. Ha ha! I'm sure I do, too! Fo...

Re: Perfume, cologne, etc. on the trails?

The problem for people who wear colognes is that they become desensitized to it and end up wearing a LOT, since they don't smell it like everyone else does. (Ever drive past the outskirts of a dairy farm gagging and wonder how anyone could stand to work/live there?) Ironically, these 'aromas' claim ...

Re: Perfect Site/Trail to Hike and Film

No, sorry - I am talking about the Superstitions. I think your first instinct to go there was spot on. To access the area I mentioned, you would hike in from Rt 88 near Tortilla Flat. You can find more info on that from the link I provided to the hike description on this website. As far as a permit,...

Re: Perfect Site/Trail to Hike and Film

How about rocks and waterfalls? Check out some of the winter/early spring photo sets for the Peter's Cave hike: http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=5009
If your timing is good on the water flow, the mouth of Peter's Canyon at Tortilla Creek is unbearably scenic IMO.
