Re: What do you do for a living??

Congrats, Jake! And goood luck, Liz. Re the job: I work for Flag's school district as a speech/language pathologist. Call me if you need help with your speech after a head injury when hiking--just kidding. I worked at the hospital for over 10 years and had to leave because it made me sad. Working wi...

Re: Horton Creek fees?

I haven't been there this year, but last year there was a sign at the nearest parking lot--the one with the toilets, with a day use fee. I just park on the road to avoid the fees.

Re: Heat Stroke

Congrats, Kevin, on breaking your Diet Coke addition! You give me hope--I'm a DC addict, too. Maybe we should start a support group. Seriously, you are taking on some serious bad habits. I applaud your choices to get healthier. :worthy:

Secret Canyon to the rim

Does anyone know if it is possible to follow Secret Canyon to the rim going up canyon? I know that the Loy Canyon trail tops out at the saddle with Secret Canyon on the other side and I was wondering about if it would be possible. Or would you have to go up Loy Canyon and down Secret--would rappelin...

Crested Cactus Destroyed

I saw this on KPHO news last night: http://www.kpho.com/video?clipId=7426527&autostart=true A double crested saguaro in the Four Peaks area has been destroyed. I don't know much more, but it would be nice if someone local could confirm/deny. The man who reported the story called it King Crest.

Re: Brave Arizona soldier injured

I'll keep him in my thoughts. Rehabilitation has come a long way and I'm sure that he will receive the best care possible.

Re: Yosemite new "hazard zone" closures

NPS is probably getting hyper vigilant since that 18 year old fell at Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone when a ledge gave way under her.

Re: I give up.

Jim, I'm sorry the situation has gotten so intolerable for you out there. The constant wind and dust drove me nuts, too, and I was wasn't LIVING out there when I worked on the Rez. Here is my :M2C: indoor plants. You might be amazed at how you can grow vegetables in containers inside you home. You c...

Re: Memorials on Public Land

Scattering ashes is one thing, making memorials is another. The pictures, notes, plastic flowers, etc. are litter in my opinion. I think they should scatter some ashes in the person's favorite place then put the rest in a proper place (on the mantel, in a crypt, etc) and keep the notes, flowers, and ...

Re: Help find missing VOC hiker Jim Schwartz

Looks like he hiked up Woods Canyon about 8 miles. I'm relieved for the family that he was found. Now if someone could locate GPS Joe for his family.

Read a follow-up on this one: no evidence of lion or bear dna, no hairs. Looks like a tall tale to tell the grandkids. :sl:

Re: Grizzlies

Interesting article, but it doesn't tell the whole story. I was in Yellowstone in January and did a one day photo tour with Alpen Guides. My guide, who has been working in Yellowstone for years, said that the bear that killed the man by the lake was put down after she and the two cubs were found in ...

Re: Pixal Trvia

@SuperstitionGuy And I was getting discouraged about being so far behind you that I could never catch up! I still don't think I can catch up, what with working fulltime in a job that doesn't allow time for HAZ, a big push with a friend on a photography venture, a new grandbaby, a husband, a dog, 4 ...

Re: Shameless request for votes

Love your pictures, but did you know that arizonaguide can now use them for perpetuity without compensating you? I, too, have submitted pix to this site, but stopped once I learned via the hippie's facebook page from a comment made by Derek von Briesen about how you give all you rights away when you...

Re: Best way to carry a SPOT

I have the original model, which did not come with velcro straps or a holder. I attached a little lanyard from an old camera to one of the screws on the back battery cover and slip it thru the top strap of my pack, then hook the whole thing on the top so that it points up to the sky. I wish I had th...

Re: Why I like the White Mountains better than Flagstaff are

Re: Pronghorns around Flagstaff. I've seen them on the road to Grand Falls--the dirt road once you turn off Leupp Road. And they don't seem to be very afraid of the cars. The area south of Parks about 5 miles south on Garland Prairie road, is kind of a pronghorn preserve, open only to bow hunting. T...

Re: Hiker killed shot by hunter who mistook him for a bear

The death of the hiker is a horrible thing. I fear hunters more than any other situation in the fall up here in elk country. I tie orange flagging tape to my backpack, wear orange or yellow shirts and have a hunter orange hat--not the most fashionable look, but at least I hope I increase my visibili...
