Re: day use only....only

pitch a tent If only camping were that simple for everyone. It would be great if they could come up with some definition of 'low impact camping' and allow that. Maybe if camping was allowed only a minimum distance from the roads, say half a mile, it would cut out the kind of camping the area couldn...

Re: Camera lust

@hippiepunkpirate Thanks for the awesome response; I'm probably just being too argumentative. I get that way. I guess I just found that style quote as a little trite. Your response is anything but trite. I think a lot of what you call style, I'm just considering as quality. I'm an opportunistic sho...

Re: Camera lust

@hippiepunkpirate I don't think you want me pursuing a personal style :scared: . I just want to take good pictures that share what I experienced. Peronally, I would encourage anyone with the means and interest in photography to get an slr, in addition to the compact. There are lots of nuances compa...

Re: Best Mexican Food - Tucson

I was thinking of jack's too, but also haven't been there for years. I certainly wouldn't drive out of my way just to try it, again, and it probably is out of your way. take this with a grain of salt because i haven't eaten here in years, but jack's original bbq on the east side used to have a reput...

Re: Camera lust

it's the equipment that sets the photographer apart from the rest I generally agree with a lot of what you say except for this. The persistent theme I hear in reading about/looking at wildlife photography is about getting close. I've been going to some of the national geo lectures they have at the ...

Re: Camera lust

I'd pretty much agree with this article, and azbackpacker. Someone gave me a book recently (I think they were trying to tell me something :sl: ) all about composition, The Photographers Eye. Its got me pretty excited. I've read it through twice already, and will probably read it again a few more tim...

Re: CQ HAZ Ham's (AKA Amateur Radio operators)

@Thoreau Thanks so much for the detailed response. I'll probably also consider some of the cheaper and smaller units, but it looks like they don't have as much power. The 8gr is spec'd at 9 ounces. I'm pretty sure I can find 9 ounces to remove from my pack. APRS wasn't something I was considering.....

Re: CQ HAZ Ham's (AKA Amateur Radio operators)

@HippyHaley Fort Tuthill! That takes me back...we went every year when I was a kid.

@Thoreau
@BEEBEE

Do either of you have suggestions for a new handheld? It would be for hiking.

Thats often been my experience; it looks like I have great cell phone service until I actually try to make a call.

Re: CQ HAZ Ham's (AKA Amateur Radio operators)

I have a license (whatever tech+ means anymore) and might be willing to participate in something. Right now all I do is sporadically attend my dad's club's field day events. The last one I went to, in exchange for working the novice station a bit, I got meals and a base camp to go hiking from. I wou...

Re: Canon G12

Ha! Joe Bartels beat me to it. This was I was writing while he posted his comment I have the G11. From what I've read on the interweb, the G12 isn't too much more improved, more of a G11.5. I believe its the same sensor. I think, in its time, it was one of the best compact cameras, but if I dropped ...

Re: Survey for my english 102 paper

Guadalupe Ridge on South Mountain 1. Views are good, but not great. You can see lots of houses and buildings but they are small. 2. 3 3. low 4. Usually only see 2 or 3 people on a weekend 5. Not that I know of. 6. I've seen a dog. 7. I would say the hike is very peaceful. Although you can see the ci...

Re: A slice of history

I just read this a few weeks ago. Its quite the eye-opener on that ditch between Tucson and Phoenix, and very readable.

Re: GPS Sensor reviews

I've been using a garmin forerunner 305 regularly for several years and have had only good experiences with it. It has held up very well. I haven't noticed any drop in battery life. The elevation calculation is very inaccurate, but I think distance is moderately accurate. I usually subtract about 10...

Re: "Wallow Fire" in Bear Wallow Wilderness

That is very mean-spirited, and that is what I am saying to everyone who says hateful things about environmentalists. I am sick and tired of all the dumb*pumpkin rednecks from Eagar saying the same things you are saying, and now I have to hear it from non-locals as well? It is NOT TRUE, it is mean,...

found this in the comment section for the latest update on azcentral.com http://firefighterblog.com/2011/06/wallow-fire-updated-map/ Here is an interactive version of that map, http://www.geomac.gov/viewer/viewer.shtml. Over to left, click on the arrow next to "Active Fires". As you zoom ...

Re: Taking better pictures with standard camera

I really like what Paul did to the image. Paul, what steps did you do?

That said, disappointed Canon S90/S95 customers are few. Its just a little bit more money.

Re: Taking better pictures with standard camera

Also important to note that the photo you posted really doesn't seem too bad. As Paul said, a bit of sharpening in a photo editing program would help. I agree with this. This picture looks pretty similar to what comes straight out of my Canon G11. Something to keep in mind is that a camera may have...
