Re: 5 Best AZ hikes!

Thanks Paul. I had looked at West Fork of Oak Creek and was pondering it. I guess I just needed a little validation for that one to put it on our "must do" list. I will check out the other one.

5 Best AZ hikes!

Okay, so, I am intel gathering here. A little background for my search: Have decided on a springtime AZ trip to AZ. Were doing Fall this year, but was recently "requested" by the wife and daughter to go during wildflower season. Now, my idea is to hike when we can and see what we can, all ...

Benchmark Maps

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using the Benchmark Road and Recreation Atlases? I have heard they are very detailed and give much more insight to the particular state the map references than a standard atlas or even state recreation map (official rec map from state government). Is ...

Re: Probation for GC child endangerment

"Wero's still on probation for the above-mentioned assault case, but the Arizona U.S. Attorney's office decided not to revoke his probation based on the Grand Canyon incident." Really?!?! "After pleading guilty, Wero and Lake, a U.S. Army veteran, were also fined $75 and ordered to ta...

Re: nik wallenda to attempt canyon crossing

Sounds like the nut, Karl Wallenda, who tight roped across Tallulah Gorge here in GA. Something like 800 feet up, not that it matters. 200, 800, 1500, either way "Wallenda Soup"! The tower he used to secure his rope is still there, pushed over, of course. The reason the tower was pushed ov...

Re: Multimillionaire wants you to find his hidden treasure

I have to go "hat's off" to this guy. Whether or not he put actual gold or whatever in the box, or a note, whoever finds it has found a treasure just by the act of finding it, out in God's countryside. this guy is obviously very passionate about what is happening to our children and our cu...

Re: Walkscoring - walking in the suburbs sucks

"… not because you’re lazy, but because it’s such a terrible walking experience." -Steve Mouzon, Walkscore

No, it is almost definitely laziness the majority of the time! Apparently he has never been to a Walmart!

Re: Arizona Hiking...

That snake (and several photos like it) has ended up in several different backgrounds and photos all over the internet. Different places and different specs each time. Kinda like the infamous"Giant alligator" from Texas, Georgia, Florida, even Virginia (think not.) We sure have some REALLY...

Re: How many watermelons do I need to eat for a 20 mile hike

Does that mean I can get a DUI for doing Dew??? If you add a little Orange Crush to it, you are just askin for one!! A thought by me : I can tell you I wouldn't want to be the first officer that tried to write that one up!! I was a trooper for a few years, (now I teach LEO's) and there is no ...

Re: How many watermelons do I need to eat for a 20 mile hike

So.... according to the article, we are not supposed to drink fluids, (even though we naturally know what to do when we are thirsty) and we have the "desire" (otherwise known as our body saying drink more water, dummy!) because we don't eat enough fresh fruits and veggies...... really has ...

Places to stay "near" Sedona

Well, I know this isn't the "usual" type question here, but I am sure just as it is here in GA, it is best to seek knowledge from the local experts when trying to find those less commercialized gems, so here I am. We have been planning our AZ trip for a few months now. We have gotten a win...

Re: Adding weight during training hikes.....??????

Thanks guys for the input. Joe, I do like the half weight idea. That will likely be my route. My hikes are not going to include a super heavy pack, so that may be the ticket to be ready. My ankle issues are more related to a long term injury (when I severly sprained and tore ligaments during trainin...

Adding weight during training hikes.....??????

So, here I am again, looking for some of the extremely helpful info the HAZ members have. This time it is directly related to the actual training hikes. Here is my scenario: I am losing a little weight as I go. Well, there is along way to go in that department! haha As I do my hikes, I can expect to...

Re: Heat Index

I would have to agree with you on that one Chumley. I do think though that if people would take proper precautions, they would be better off when going from one climate to the other. I remember when I first reported to the MCAS in Yuma, the emphasis was to hydrate much and often. The heat wasn't as ...

Re: Heat Index

Here in south GA it regularly gets to 100 with humidity in the 80% and up. I have seen it in the high 90's and 95% + humidity. As Rangerkelly put it, it is ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE!! I thought I was gonna die when I left Yuma in the summer at 117 one day to move home to GA and found it at 95 degrees and...

Re: Has anybody seen a Jaguar in AZ?

With the recent post about ocelots in AZ, I thought I would be safe reviving this thread. Mainly because I see alot of people write about seeing what could be jaguars. I was called crazy when talking about what I saw in 1999 I was just east of Yuma on the east side of the Gilas. I saw a very large d...
