Vantage points for tomorrow night's lunar eclipse

Postby Newbie hiker » May 14 2003 8:42 am

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place near Phoenix to watch tomorrow night's lunar eclipse? I'd like to have a good, high vantage point to watch the moonrise because the eclipse will already have started. Are any of the parks around town open after dark?

There is papago parks "Hole in the rock" by the zoo. It's not that great, but it's better than sitting in your driveway.

"Hole in the rock"? I've never really been over there. Is it easy to find?

Its next to the phx zoo. it's easy to find, Im not sure of the road you turn on, but when when it forks off, you turn left instead of right(right is the zoo). It's by mcdowell and scottsdale rd. Im sure someone in the forum will be able to give you better directions.( it might be galvin parkway off of mcdowell) :?: I think the park is open till 10:30
Sorry I couldnt be more help. :(

Hole in the Rock is at the phoenix zoo/papago park.
Entrance to the park....
Cross Streets are Galvin Parkway just north of Van Buren.
(Galvin Pkwy turns into priest south of Van Buren and turns into 64st north of McDowell)
There will be one light on Galvin Pkwy.
You'll want to turn right (if you are heading northbound on Galvin) Or Left (if you are heading southbound on Galvin)

Or better yet....here is a link to a map of the park

hope this helps you out :GB:

I think I will sit on the roof of my house......out in the pine trees, no city lights, now that I think about it, a sleeping bag and a pillow and a beer would go along with that pretty well. If you want to get away from the city lights and not travel too far, Happy Valley road offers some pretty good vantage points with very few lights.......

Papago park is kind of in the middle of the city. The city lights may take away from the show. I've heard of people going out to Saguaro Lake and climbing a little ways up or drive up the Bee Line and turn off on the 4 peaks road turn off and watching from there.

Garden Valley from First Water Trailhead, Superstition Wilderness Area. Sit on the remains of a prehistoric ruin located at the junction of the Black Mesa Trail and the Second Water Trail and the unmarked Hackberry Springs trail.

That certainly sounds like an inspiring place to watch the show. It's a bit more of a trek than I'm looking for, though. I live in Avondale.

Any suggestions for the west side of town?

White Tanks would be my first choice, but don't they close at 7 p.m.?

Great pics kenny. I had forgotton about the eclipse as well. But remembered it as we were exiting the theater after seeing the matrix. Would have liked to seen the whole thing out in the desert, but the back patio of the local tavern had to suffice.

What did you take them with. Looks really nice. My husband took some through his telescope and they turned out nice from the back yard in Payson.

The lunar eclipse was beautiful, I saw it coming out of a group study Thursday night. I would love to see pictures, if anyone has posted any on this site.

AK how did you like the Matrix? I saw it tonight, and I loved the special effects. Did you think this movie was as good as the first? ...........and, are you looking forward to the next movie? One of my favorite parts was when Neo was being attacked the numerous Smith Agent's in the park, after meeting with the Oracle.
Let's go hiking!
