Does anyone have a bear canister I can borrow?

Postby Dirt4dinner » Jun 24 2009 1:52 pm

Hey Hikers,
I am heading up to WA state for the 4th of July weekend and am looking for a bear canister. If it gets damaged...I will replace it :scared:

Anybody have one laying around?

why do you need one? just tie your food up ~15ft between 2 trees and your good to go,

There is a super small one that is fairly cheap ($39) at http://www.bareboxer.com/
It fits in just about any size pack.
I just bought one and it is roomy enough for a day or two. and it weighs less than 2 lbs (Yeah it is still heavy)
Anyhow it ships pretty fast since it is coming from California.
The weight is slightly offset by the advantage of conveniance..

I have an Ursack and it works well for rodents but I think it would make a chew toy for a bear. I am sure he wouldnt get the food but he would definately be able to chew and chew and make the bag pretty uh chewed.

Yeah.. It is the same one that Tim had during the Maxwell trail overnighter. A good pound lighter than the Garcia.

You can rent them, as I found out by googling. Let's see if I can find it again. Ok, and this outfit is in the Valley: http://www.lowergear.com/product.php?id=160

I ended up renting one from some people in Tucson, but I found out you can rent them at the trailhead sometimes, too, like at Whitney Portal Store.

I found one to rent in the Seattle area, but they only had one available. I have used a bear canister once before in the Sierras and I really liked it, it actually fit nicely into my pack and I could stuff tons of stuff into it...it was the most organized I have ever been on a backpacking trip.

I could hang stuff from a tree, but I know there are very active bears in the area I will be and I am planning on taking the extra steps to ensure food safety. So the question still stands, does someone have one I can borrow for a week? If nobody steps up I appreciate the rental lead and will probably go that way.

That rental place is super cool....but they have to ship the item to me. There isn't enough time for that unfortunately. But for future referance, that place rents all kinds of fun stuff!

That's goofy, they're in Scottsdale and they won't let you pick it up?

Turns out they do allow local pick up....this is a very cool site. It would be perfect if you want to take someone on their first trip and they don't own any gear. Prices seem reasonable and they have some of the nicest stuff on the market.

3 days = $12

for $15 a year, you can join the Arizona Backpacking Club and we'll let you borrow one. I'll vouch for you.
