The ABC's of Hiking

Postby BobP » Apr 28 2010 9:12 am

So I was looking at my HAZ map and there is a cool feature that lists all of the hikes in alpha order. The question is how many letters(hikes) do you need to complete the alphabet? I still need to do hikes that begin with the following letters J,O,U,V,X.Y,and Z. :wrt:

Its HAZ ... you can create and name your own hikes. It'll be quicker that way! 8)

Joe says Hike Arizona not a book. I'm a by the website kinda guy. Generic naming would be cheating in my eyes. :)

Zuni Wash. I can go get it for you sometime! It's in my county. Not sure what I have to trespass to get it...probably a TON of petrglyphs in there...

Looks like I need K, Q, and the typical X, Y, Z... Hmmm...

Lets see... I've got Keet Seel on the calendar for August.
I've been wanting to do Quartz Peak for a while - may have to wait until it cools down again.
I've done Yetman, though I'm not sure I've ever actually logged it - that'll be a good one to grab some Saturday morning
And, of course, I'm very eager for the Zion Narrows trip sometime.
I suppose that leaves me with X. Any ideas? Maybe

You do have to keep in mind that the hike list is by state, right? Gotta come up with something else for Z - and X (and I'm not condoning this activitiy in anyway, but perhaps any hike done with the X-Hiking Club could start with X?).

I'm really surprised Yetman isn't on the list already. I guess it's too easy for this crowd?
There are just two switchbacks left. And another half-mile to the destination...

g j q u x y z

Basically the funny letters. I think I can take care of g and j easy enough, but the other 5 might be tough.

Xavier Well. It's about four miles in from Gunsight near the Keystones along an old dirt mine road. Good place for mountain biking. And, yes; it's "Xavier" not "San Xavier" on the topo...

James Canyon looks to be the best J hike, but I don't think I have the huevos to do the rappel.

@hippiepunkpirate You can bypass the medium rappel, but it's pretty friggen steep :scared:

@HAZ Might have to check out Xavier Well for a true HAZ completion. I just checked the database, no X hikes in any of the states.

I doubt it, next time I'm on my other computer I'll look. Basically imagine an 80 degree angle with falling loose dirt and leaves. You have to hold the spaced out tree limbs sliding down about 40 feet. Looking up I didn't think I could go back without help.

Hmmm....guess I could always go look at it. A loop down James and up Kelly is the most likely choice, so if I could get down it I would be fine.

So, put it up there. There are lots of easy trails on here, but a lot of Tucson ones are not on here. A lot of White Mts ones, too--I had better get busy...

Q,U,X,Y,Z... I lucked out with the Javalina-Ridgeline-Beverly Canyon loop for my "J", and Vulture Peak for the "V". I was really close to having "O" to cover as well, but I just remember my stay at Oak Flats Campground a couple years ago. :D I'm tempted to include my trip to Upper Burro Creek, but I was freaked out enough about the rugged drive out that I turned around a made the drive before I did my planned hike.

It'd be easy to hammer out Quartz Ridge Trail #8 for "Q", Upper Burro Creek near 6 mile crossing would be a great early summer swimming hole, and maybe I'll hit Yeager Canyon this coming fall during my planned Mingus Mountain autumn color extravaganza. :y:
