Willard: The Hermit of Gully Lake

Postby kevinweitzel75 » Jul 30 2011 5:04 pm

Came across this just goofing off today. Pretty interesting, will have to read the book. Was wondering if anybody has heard of this guy before. Unfortunatly, his body was found June 27, 2004.

Haven't heard of this fellow but I did read years ago about a man who lived in the forests/mountains of Idaho in a similar manner. Few people ever saw him and he lived in hollowed out fallen tree trunks to stay hidden. He finally got into trouble with the law because he broke into a USFS storage building to obtain some clothing and a few other miscellianous items of little value. He was eventually caught and when interviewed was asked what was the most difficult item to find that he needed to continue living in the wilderness. His response was a needle and thread to repair his clothing.

It was an interesting article and I do not know what became of him but I would like to find the story again. Have any of you ran across this story online or where ever?

Sorry for the hijack, but that reminds me of "Idaho Loners; Hermits, Solitaires, and Individualists", by Cort Conley. It was a great read. I think the guy you mentioned is one of those covered. Another more famous one was Sylvan Hart, aka Buckskin Bill.

A few years ago in Flagstaff the FS found and evicted a guy who had lived for 11 years in a cave on Mt. Elden, just outside the surrounding residential area!

I've heard of Buckskin Bill. But he had contact with a lot of river rafters on the Salmon or Snake rivers, I think. Haven't heard of the person you are talking about, Owen. But I will try to find something on him. Sounds like an interesting read.

What harm was this guy causing? Theres plenty of times I have wanted to just pack a pack and never come back. Can't blame these guys.

The other guy sounds a like William Moreland (aka the Ridgerunner), but there must be several others with similar stories.
