Ooops - base jumper snags in Supes

Postby Al_HikesAZ » Feb 29 2012 8:57 pm

In case anybody was wondering about the excitement in the Supes tonight - looks like a base jumper miscalculated. http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_southeast_valley/apache_junction/base-jumper-gets-stuck-on-superstition-mountains
I will refrain from any disreprectfulness so Joe doesn't spank me again. Enough said. But this stupidity deserves it.
According to spokesman Elias Johnson, a 30-year-old Casa Grande man leaped off the face of the mountain, but after he deployed his parachute, it got caught on the side of the cliff.
The man is wedged in a crevasse 150 feet up from the bottom of the mountain.
Air15 video showed the man huddled in his parachute on a narrow ledge.

Casa Grande man? Rob is this a neighbor of yours?

Any idea where he launched from????
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

how bad is it that I like non-fatal accidents like this more for the fact that we don't have the "disrespectful posts will be deleted" warnings to deal with?

I guess this brings up the old question of "Who pays for this stupid accident"?

It said something about he packed his parachute backwards...

Where's the line between a hiker who mistakes a game trail for "the" trail, and needs to be rescued, and the base jumper who mistakes whatever it might be and needs to be rescued? I know it's there somewhere.

One is something that happens to you, the other is something you do to yourself. I feel more sympathy for the former than the latter ...

I thought this was illegal in the Supes Wildness??? Is it just hang gliding that's illegal and not base jumping?

I just read about the backwards bit myself. Unreal. Spend less time being a wild and crazy "bro", trying to become a YouTube meme, and more time doing things the right way. (Coming from someone who used to pack parachutes for a living ...)

Some of you referred to this incident as an accident. You have got to be kidding!
I consider base jumping the equivalent of Russian roulette with a six gun? :scared:
Has anyone ever posted a video of a successful base jump off of the Flatiron? :-k

I was shocked to hear base jumping is legal in the Supes! I've heard it on both channel 3 and 10. I worked from home today and the news is all over this. The jumper is not going to be charged. Per Fox 10, their reasoning is other people in need of rescue won't call for help because they don't want to pay for the rescue.

I wanna go dirt-biking in the supes too! But if I get hurt I won't call for help if they're gonna fine me or charge me for the rescue so that makes it legal, right?

In Arizona, hikers are not charged for rescues. Theoretically they can be, but it doesn't happen. I guess they are extending that to base-jumpers? :? I think they have charged some people for driving past barricades when the washes are running, using the "stupid motorist" law. Maybe there should be a "stupid basejumper" law?

Does the phrase "bucket list" predate the movie?

It would be a shame that someone from SAR would be injured or worse, before something is done to protect these idiots from themselves.
