AZ's on the Wild List

Postby youngboy » Mar 13 2003 8:18 pm

the latest backpacker mag did a list of all the top hikes in the US and AZ was up there!

Ex:
Best skinny-dipping: Grapevine Creek, AZ
Easiest Place to find rattlers: Chiricahua Mtns., AZ
Most Idyllic Waterfall: Havasu Falls, AZ
Sweetest Sunset: Grand Canyon, AZ
Best place to work on you tan: Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, AZ
and The greatest 360-degree view: Humphreys Peak, AZ

wow im glad i live in AZ :D
anyone been to these places? if they are really that good can't wait to visit them (especially Humphreys Peak)

We have been to most of these and many more! In our opinion, you can't beat Arizona for hiking and camping and historic destinations. Not to mention, we have the best weather, too! Hope you get to visit all of them!!

Hum...somehow the idea of the "suntan set" heading out to the Kofa's to work on their tans seems wildly improbable to us.

I don't think there's an issue of Backpacker that doesn't have at least one or two Arizona references! I was really impressed with the pick of Humphrey's Peak - of all the mountains in the country they could have picked; makes me look even more forward to my first trip up there this summer! :D

Are you going up from the west side, or from Locket Meadows? Staying the night in Locket Meadows is a great way to acclimate a bit. Its about 15+/- RT from that side, but its a great hike. Just head up the old road from Locket (TH is over on the north side, by the privvies), there is a link up trail from the meadow to the Wheatherford Trail which gets you to the saddle, then up to the top, and back. Makes for a good long day. I did it once leaving from here, the total EC in such short time really got me.

I do want to spend the night first, so thanks for the Locket Meadow suggestion!
