Nankoweap River Right to 60 Mile Rapids/Little Colorado

Postby zlaprade » Oct 12 2011 9:45 pm

Has anybody successfully hiked River Right from Nankoweap (at the River) down river to 60 Mile Rapids, or better yet the Little Colorado Convergence (on the opposite side)?

That's the Hayduke trail route, as far as I know, it goes just fine and many people have hiked it: here are my notes collected from various sources (I haven't actually hiked it):

4.5 hours Nankoweep to Kwagunt
2 hours Kwagunt to Malgosa
1 hours Malgosa to Awatubi
boulder hopping and easy ledge hiking: Awatubi to Sixtymile
partial scramble/ partial easy hiking, don't succumb to temptation to climb: Sixtymile to opposite LCR.

I have a friend who has hiked more than half the north side below the rim. He quit hiking a few years ago. Right this very minute Dave Baker and several others are way downriver, around 209 or thereabouts, pursuing the quest to hike the entire North Rim side, from Lees' Ferry to Grand Wash Cliffs, below the rim. It has taken that group a few years, and sometimes a bit of outside support, from boaters, from sympathetic NPS personnel, and from friends with 4WD vehicles willing to make the long drive out onto the Strip to pick them up. They carry a sat phone. On last summer's river trip in August we dropped off 2 rocket boxes full of food, batteries, tequila and margarita mix, for one member of that group to pick up in Oct. Marked it with GPS, etc. We'll pick up the boxes later on on another river trip. (No I am not going to tell you where all that tequila is! ;) )

Anyone wants to know more about this ongoing adventure, I can find out more later today.
