Third pipeline breaks at Grand Canyon National Park

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. -- A one-mile section of the North Kaibab National Trail between Roaring Springs and Cottonwood Campground was closed on Thursday after a third pipeline broke in Grand Canyon National Park.

The break occurred Thursday morning about a half a mile above the campground. It washed out a 45-foot section of the trail, which led to the closure.

On May 25, the National Park Service reported a pipeline break near Phantom Ranch. The pipeline broke in two separate places.

Cross-canyon travel will no longer be possible with the most recent break and trail closure. People with reservations at Cottonwood Campground and Phantom Ranch will have to use the South Kaibab or Bright Angel Trail to reach their destination.

Crews expect to have the North Kaibab National Trail between Roaring Springs and Cottonwood Campground open to the public by June 8.

Potable water will not be available at Roaring Springs and Cottonwood Campground until the pipeline is repaired, which is expected to happen by Sunday.

Potable water is available at Phantom Ranch and the North and South Rims of the Grand Canyon.

For more information about trail access, permit changes, and water availability in the inner canyon visit http://go.nps.gov/grcabackcountry.
