Postby Al_HikesAZ » Mar 30 2006 6:50 pm

This opinion piece was in today's ARIZONA DAILY STAR. If you are in Tucson, stop by Summit Hut and help out. If you are anywhere in AZ where you can get a petition, help.

Opinion: Support petition for land reform
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.30.2006

For more than 35 years, Summit Hut — the company I co-founded with a good friend — has enjoyed the pleasure of outfitting the community and visitors of Tucson with services and merchandise to suit their unique outdoor and travel adventures.
We are proud to offer what we consider to be the very finest of gear and resources for climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, camping, hiking, trekking, travel, birding, search and rescue, trail running, navigation, orienteering and much more.
One of the most spectacular areas enjoyed by East Siders and visitors is Saguaro National Park East and the Rincon Valley. I grew up in Tucson and moved with my family to the Rincon Valley because of the incredible Sonoran Desert and mountain landscape.
Rapid growth is changing this area, and we need to act now to protect the land and provide better planning for the future.
The lands selected for protection from development in Conserving Arizona's Future, the citizens' initiative for state trust land reform, reflect community needs.
As Tucson continues to grow, we need to do it wisely.
That's why Summit Hut endorsed the initiative and is working to collect signatures to get it on the ballot in November 2006. Stop by one of our two stores in Tucson — at 5045 E. Speedway and 605 E. Wetmore Road — and sign the petition today.
