anything like salome near tucson?

Postby dahawk » Jun 03 2006 12:19 am

anybody know if there is anything like the jug around tucson? not so much the perfection, but just something similar with respect to fun and time frame? just moved to tucson and I have a lot of single days off, so i would like to find some good, easy to tech, day hikes. any info would be appreciated.

Are you looking for a swim? Lemmon Pools, Romero Pools, Hutch's Pool, Tanque Verde Falls, Seven Falls, Sabino Canyon. All of these subject to drying up during drought--some more than others. Ask locally (I no longer live in Tucson). Go to Summit Hut, get maps, ask around for latest swim info. Some pools will fill up again if monsoon is pretty good, so if they are dry now they might be good again in late August.

Lemmon Pools is the one that's pretty hard to get to. The rest are straightforward hikes on trails. Well, not lower Sabino. That's on a road with a shuttle bus--you can walk or take the shuttle. I'd bet money it's pretty dried up right now, though. Probably someone else will add comments to that!

take a look at Sycamore canyon, Pajarita. its not a tech climb but does have the feel of the jug in some sections. Maybe a 1 hour drive from Tookson.

Just hiked in Sabino canyon the other day and Hutch's pool was very low, nothing you'd want to swim in. :(

Have a look at Hot Springs Canyon as well. Not as extreme as the Jug but lots of fun.
