ash creek questions

Postby Crocodile Ryan » Aug 16 2006 2:33 pm

ive been wanting to hike this trail for some time now and i finally have a chance this weekend to make it down there, however i have a couple questions

1. how far is oak flat from the TH

2. the temp up there, at 9000ft it will be fine but it drops 5200ft? so the terminus of the trail is at 4800ft?? thats probably pretty warm right now, can anyone tell me if this is correct

3.road conditions up there, with all the rain we have been getting im wondering if the road is all torn up

any info would help, as the rangers office is generally no help and offers the same info as always

1. I don't know how far Oak Flat is; it may be about half way or more. If you plan to camp there watch out for poison ivy, lots of it. There is a nice previous use site there.

2. The desert end will be warm, however Safford has been under 100 degrees of late due to all the storms. The lower end also has no shade.

3. The road is fine, it is washed in places but cars were up there last weekend.

I've been thinking about this one as well, unfortunately can't make it this weekend.

Has anyone ever tried doing this one in reverse? I was thinking it might be nicer start off at the lower elevation while its still cool in the AM.

Is there a lower trailhead with good access to it?
