Night Hiking in the White Tanks Allowed?

Night Hiking in the White Tanks Allowed?

Postby GKnoell85 » Oct 28 2009 3:36 pm

I Love hiking the white tanks and would like to do more hiking after I get out of work on weekdays around 4-5pm. The problem is that with the sun setting around 5:30-6 I will have little daylight available. Does the White Tank's park staff enforce the, "All trails close at sunset" rule? Do I have to worry about my car getting locked into the park? Any thought would be great!!

I've night hiked the trails there without getting in trouble, but I was out the gate before they locked up.

I'm fairly certain they'll lock you in and leave a nasty note on your car telling you to contact them letting them know you're okay or they are going to send out a search party (happened to a friend of mine).

Actually, backpacking is even allowed in the White Tanks. My brother called them to ask once, and they just want you to let them know ahead of time, along with your destination and ETA. I would talk to one of the rangers there and see what kind of options you've got if you want to hike at night. They seem pretty reasonable. Plus, I bet sunset from the Radio Summit is pretty remarkable.

Where did you park, in the lot next to your trailhead or outside the lot?
