1-2 Mile Hike for kids in Greer?

1-2 Mile Hike for kids in Greer?

Postby jaybird » Aug 29 2011 11:09 am

We'll be camping in Greer in a couple weeks and are looking for a short (1-2 mile) easy hike that kids (age 4-8) could do that wasn't consumed by the Wallow fire. Any suggestions?

The Butler Canyon nature trail is a nice little 1m flat loop. Don't know if it survived. Lots of mosquitoes in the summer.

On this same page are tabs for Pole Knoll and Squirrel Springs, both on the west side of Greer so one or both should have survived.

All trails in Greer remain closed, last I heard. Pole Knoll is the closest trail area to Greer that is open. Also G&F White Mountain Grasslands Area, and Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area, and Wenima Wildlife area--which are the three Game and Fish Dept. lands that are open. Directions to these can be found here on HAZ, on the alphabetical listings, except for Wenima, which is just outside Springerville, on the way to St. Johns. (Watch for signs at junction of 60 and 180, just west of Springerville, that say Wenima Wildlife Area and Hooper Herefords. Beautiful creek hike. It's my #1 recommendation.)

You have probably already gone on your trip to Greer - but in case you are still planning - the Butler Canyon Nature Trail is the perfect length. When we were in Greer (August 20th) the parking area was blocked but I think you walk a little ways to get to the trail. It was flooding more than fire that was blocking that area.

It's beautiful still in Greer except for the fire line on the ridge behind Greer Lodge. Unbelievable that the fire stopped where it did in that area.

We walked along the road that parallels Little Colorado River and is near East Fork Trail - not a great "hike" but good for jumping down near the water and exploring. Good for kids' short attention span with lots of natural curiosity.

You can walk along the river right in the village too. I think there's an access across from the Rendezvous Diner.

I had thought Butler Canyon Trail got torched. I had seen some photos taken of it by the FS. Would like to find out more.

You're right Elizabeth - - saw pic here: http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/B ... ens/132923

I couldn't tell it was that bad from the road and the parking area was blocked off with floods.
