Devil's Chasm

Devil's Chasm

Postby gummo » Sep 05 2011 2:38 pm

Is anyone going to Devil's Chasm this year and has room for an additional hiker? I've never been there and would like to go with someone. I'm not familar with the Sierra Ancha range at all but it looks awesome.

If you post it as an event a few months in advance and state up front that you need someone with a 4WD vehicle you have a good chance that way of roping some people in. That hike will likely generate some interest, especially if a date is set.

I would be interested too. I've not been there either, and it's been on my wish list now for a while.

I was out there in January of this year when it meant hiking through snow in my Teva's. I enjoyed it enough to hike it again, although I'd hike it when it isn't quite so cold and see what it looks like without snow... and maybe see a few rattlers this time!

The Sierra Ancha are beautiful! I haven't been out to the chasm or Pueblo Canyon in several years but I remember that road being brutal once you pass Ellison Ranch. If you're going to drive all the way out there and have the energy, I suggest doing both Devil's Chasm and Pueblo Canyon.

We will be doing Devil's Chasm in Spring 2012, we too need someone with a 4x4 last time (we did Pueblo Canyon Ruins) we rent an all wheel drive Kia :sl: the sucker made it all the way up to the "half buried aluminum pipe" at the old mine trail WOW!

I'll be posting an event when we do Devil's Chasm if anyone wants to join us!

I'd be up for it. I'm injured right now. I should be healed by then. I'd chip in for gas or rental if needed.

I might be interested in doing this hike as well. I do not have a 4x4.

Hope you can come along! I hear its an awesome trip! We did Pueblo Canyon Ruins in the same area, GORGEOUS!

I'll be purchasing a Subaru Outback (AWD) in Feb and i know it will be able to make it to Devil's Chasm and if it can cross the creek right there it can make it up to Pueblo Canyon TH too!

so we are thinking march or april, no dates as of yet, sound good? Probably a sunday/monday/tuesday, are those days doable for anyone?

I've heard that in the springtime in that area rattlesnakes are particularly numerous, FYI.

I'd be interested in going if my leg is better by then (which it should be), and of course, if you don't mind me tagging along. If not, I'll plan on going solo or something. I have off on Tuesdays and could take Monday off with enough notice. I can't go Sunday before 3pm, tho.

After doing Devil's Chasm in the snow/ice with Gabriele a year ago, I'd much rather go back in the spring. And for me the bonus would be a better chance to add to my snake video collection! :y:

I seem to remember using my hands a good deal of the time but it was cold so I wasn't worried about snakes. This was easily the most challenging "short" hike I've ever done. The 2 waterfalls we had to climb up were a trip, and the climb to the ruins was the icing on the cake. Very cool. Do It.
