Saddle Mountain Mine Tour (Caution)

Postby mjmann » May 11 2003 11:08 pm

Just an FYI...a group of us took the "Saddle Mountain Mine Trail " this past Saturday (05/10/03) as described in this website, and had a not so good experience. We actually got lost at the point where the trail description says "take the Story Mine Trail to the left...and follow the jeep trails down to the ravine". Because of the lack of signage it is very easy to get lost and disoriented. We turned a 6.5 mile hike into probably a 20 mile hike by the time we figured out where we were. Up to that point the trail description was right on, but after that it got quite foggy as to where we had to go. The only thing we could figure is that the trail has become overgrown due to lack of usage. I almost got bit by a rattlesnake bushwhacking through the brush. Don't get me wrong...the Mazatal Mountains are absolutley gorgeous, but you don't want to get stranded out there.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I would really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks all!!!

I have been in situations like that before. The best way to keep on the trail (the right trail) is to use a map and compass, and use it often. If you are off trail, as it sounds like you were, then the use of the map and compass is vital to reaching your destination. I even use my map and compass on trails I am familiar with just to keep in practice.

Matt,

Yes that was a mistake on our part that definitely won't happen again. Before we attempt anymore hikes I plan on investing in a good compass and topo map.

Thanks for the tip.
