Anyone hiked this recently?

Postby ddas » Jul 07 2006 7:34 am

I'm new to the hiking scene, and wanted to know if the Tonto Narrows area is open (considering wildfire season) and what the water level is like? I'm about to take a group of friends up there, so want to make sure everything's kosher before I head out. Appreciate your help, thanks!

I was there a little over a week while much of the water hikes to the north were closed. Tonto Narrows wasn't affected by the closures and the water level is great, maybe only a foot below the high mark on the rocks. Still many swimmers and diving spots. If you have the time, I'd recommend wading/swimming/boulder hoping up the creek to the upper narrows about 2.5 miles up. There is a trail on the rim, but it's not as scenic or adventurous. :D

In response to Vaporman's reply:

Hiked the creek yesterday, and it was excellent. Lots of great swimming holes along the way. Checked out the upper trail for a bit, and you're right it's boring. Promptly headed back down to the creek. Even caught a thunderstorm on our way out, which was a nice way to cool off. Thanks for your help on this!
