Where are the Wild Flowers?

Postby Dano » Mar 11 2007 3:57 pm

I've been all over the Valley trails, and today I saw exactly ONE flower on the Mesquite Trail in the White Tank Mountains.

I know that this is a pretty bad year for flowers, but have you seen any? Where?

I've been hiking down in Yuma, have seen only a few brittle bush in bloom. Not much else. We didn't get rain Oct. and Nov. The fall rains are crucial for spring wildflowers. It can pour in Jan. and all you'll get is grass.

I was in the White Tanks yesterday also... Didn't see much just a couple of them blooming. I was on the Goat Camp trail though.

With the lack of rain I think you'd have a better chance finding the Dutchman's gold. Though...

I saw a couple of Mexican poppies starting to bloom on the Prospector's View trail last Sunday (Lost Dutchman SP). Not many though.

It's a good time to visit Desert Botanical Gardens if you are visiting Arizona and wanting to know what March may look like with enough winter rains.

Joe: Thanks for the link; I was going to do the Pine Creek Loop this weekend, but I had to work. I plan to do it before it's too late.

Grimey: Thanks, I'm working in Gold Canyon for the next few weeks, so I might sneak up there after work one day.

Cathy: Funny you should mention that...I drive right by the Gardens every day, so after seeing your post I looked a bit closer while on Galvin Parkway, and sure enough, there are brittlebush and globemallows there. Gracias!

Now as I have been hiking almost every day in the Gila Mtns. near Yuma I am starting to see a lot of brittlebush, some beavertail cactus, ocotillos, a few globemallows, a few sand verbena. No poppies. There was almost no rain out here, though, fall or winter.

Saw some color heading up 288 into the Sierra Anchas...some desert marigold, globemallow, lupine and brittlebrush. Some other small purple flowers too but can't identify off the top of my head.

Nothing to drive 100 miles to see. Bad year for flowers :(

Picketpost Mountain area has a lot of hedgehogs that are budding and about to bloom in about a week I'd guess. I was up there Saturday and ocotillo, globe mallow, cholla and to a lesser extent brittlebush just barely beginning to bloom.

I'm planning to take a drive tomorrow morning to a location featuring some wild flowers along the route. Any suggestions?
