2010 Baldy thread

Postby azbackpackr » Jun 29 2010 6:06 am

I have been waiting for someone to post Mount Baldy, looking at the triplogs and photosets every day, and finally we have our first one of the year: http://www.hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=11593

I plan to go up myself within a week or so, and then also signed up for that ABC backpack to Baldy. I wonder if there will be as much interest in Baldy this year as in past years?

If anyone wants a hiking companion to Baldy, please pm me. I am less available on weekends in July, however.

Don't forget to summit!!!!!!!! Check out the photos in the link above--that guy did get to the summit cairn. Also, be aware we have forecast for thunderstorms every day now. So start your hike early. I plan to start at 5 a.m. or so to do the loop.

And yes, as I have been saying all along, there is still snow up there. But now it looks pretty doable. No snowshoes needed!

If you want to do a 2 or 3-night backpacking trip, start at East Fork Trail #95 near the end of 373 in Greer, which morphs into East Baldy Trail. Hike to summit, then go down West Baldy Trail to West Fork Trail #94 and you will end up in Greer again, near Molly Butler's, with your car up the road a mile or so. Or you could do it the other way around. I think total mileage for that would be in the neighborhood of 30. I wouldn't try it in a day--I am getting too old for 30-mile dayhikes!
