Just so the Phoenix folks know, Old Spanish Trail is not a trail, but a busy paved road. It does go through some less-populated desert, with sparsely scattered houses on big lots, though. Sounds to me like the guy saw her, pulled off on a side road ahead of her, then walked through the desert to try to waylay her as she ran by.

There's a lot of traffic out there, actually. Now that Vail blew up, lots of folks commute up through there to get to Speedway\Broadway, etc...
