Horton Creek fees?

Postby jimmyfish » Aug 18 2012 12:58 pm

I am getting conflicting info today. Is the trailhead parking for Horton Creek a fee area? Are fees just for campground parking? Is the day use / picnic area a fee based parking lot. I need up to date info. Thanks

I just park there and hike. I've seen folks picnic and not pay fees, because I don't think they need to.
The only fee sign I've seen is at the campsites by the trailhead.
So in answer to your question, unless you camp it's free.

They are considering making all the THs in the Highline Wilderness have fees, but haven't done it yet as far as I know. They have to qualify that the THs they want to charge fees at meet the requirements of having at least 7 of the X key features. Some of their proposals, such as charging at the 260 TH, would violate the law because it only has 1 or 2 amenities. I don't recall how many amentities are at Horton.

I haven't been there this year, but last year there was a sign at the nearest parking lot--the one with the toilets, with a day use fee. I just park on the road to avoid the fees.

I haven't done this trail in many years but I recall the amenities as being some trashed-out picnic areas and putrid pit-toilets. Don't think that qualifies a FEE! Of course there is always starting at FR 300.......

I believe that the fee 'pipe' that is/was at the trailhead west of the road is just a remenant from when the NFS was breaking the law for years, charging at most all the trailheads on the TNF. Even after the fee system was halted, the TNF left the pipe fully operational with no 'do not pay' sign or removing the pipe or blocking the opening in which to deposit one's fee. [-X

^^^^^ NFS corruption?
Btw, if the Camp Host lady from last year is still there do not park up there or make any eye contact with her.
