Gear Alert! NEW Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx only $200 ...

Postby paulshikleejr » May 24 2010 11:13 pm

GEAR ALERT! The Garmin GPSMAP® 60CSx is on sale massively at REI.com! It's only $200! :o This price is so good that the item disappeared from REI.com for a couple of hours earlier today. It's back, but now it's saying it's backordered.

I saw an ad for Cabela's that is $219.99 for the full bundle. http://cabelasflyers.dirxion.com/4hg/gl ... .3.1.0001# - Page 17 of the ad.

Prices should be low everywhere soon, the new version is coming out, which I've heard will list for $500. At $200, the 60 CSx would be the steal of all time.

The Cabela's "bundle" sounds like a great deal. So great, I even ordered it online.

However, unless you're one of the lucky few who ordered online or picked up from the store a "bundle" very early in the sale, there will be a long wait before you'll get it: Customer Service just told me that they don't expect to get resupplied until the end of July!?!?!

The unit I ordered from REI arrived yesterday. So I have to decide if I'm willing to wait two months to get the unit, a case (Amazon: $13), and TOPO U.S. 100K (Amazon: $80) for $220 or just keep what I have and get a case now from Amazon for $13: for $213, overall.

Hmmm. I'm cheap enough that that's actually a hard choice.

By the way, the description in the catalog linked above says the 2008 version of TOPO U.S. 100K is included, but the online store says it's the 2006 version. The customer service lady said the 2008 version is included.

I've decided to keep the 60CSx I bought from REI for $199.99.

I asked REI to match the Cabela's deal, but they said, "No." Then the guy told me some stuff about the REI (so called) difference. In the end, the price of $199.99, the uncertainty about the an event eight weeks in the future, my desire to do the GPS thing now, what the guy said about REI's co-op nature (I'm a member), and REI's 100% satisfaction guarantee, tipped me towards venturing forth with the 60CSx in my hot little hands.

By the way, REI has it's own bundle: a Dakota 20 with the TOPO U.S. 100K DVD for $250. That tempted me for a bit, but in the end I did what I did.

Finally, the 60CSx from REI had everything in the box that the Costco unit has and the Paradise Valley store (I believe) just restocked.

The 100k Topo is nothing to write home about. I think you made the right call.

You'll be happy with your new investment.. congrats!

If you decide to buy some topo maps vrs downloading for free, I highly recommend you consider buying the 1:24k DVD Garmin Southwest States (AZ,NM,CO,UT)..
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-MapSource- ... ikearizona unless you really need the Garmin 1:100k series for all USA.. I have both and am very satisfied with Garmin's 1:24k SW series for hiking. I only use the 1:100k for driving cross-country for roads, bathroom stops.. :)

The indispensable map for me is the Garmin City Navigator. Besides all that road info, it has jillions of businesses in the Points of Interest database. I can fly anywhere on a moment's notice without doing any homework and find what I need without a phone or network connection.

Thank you, all, for the feedback.

Yes, I also bought the City Navigator® North America NT on microSD when I bought the 60CSx.

I've since exchanged the microSD versiono for the DVD version: the microSD version isn't usable as a R/W datacard.

It's my plan to get the TOPO U.S. 24K Southwest DVD in a few months.

excellent! now Scout can have some company.

Order was cancelled - I guess they didn't have the stock to support the demand. Too bad. Now I just don't know if I can afford the extra $165...

Try complaining about the cancelled order, that's pretty low rent to offer it at a price and not honor it.
