Bumper crop

Bumper crop

Postby Nighthiker » Aug 27 2010 8:18 am

Lots of wild berries along the Rim, have not seen such large numbers of berries before. While visiting my brother at his campsite a tree apx 30' high and about foot in dia. snapped at the base and fell to the ground. Looked at the tree no visible indication the tree was bad. It snapped at the base of the tree at ground level.

Camp site? Probably one that was established by countless people driving around and damaging the roots? It probably had root decay and it snapped at the base from that.
I think Monsoon season will begin around June 20, plus or minus 5 days, not by the calendar according to the NWS, but when dew points rise dramatically, and it begins to rain over the Sacramento Mountains. It will start about 10 days later in Arizona.

no kidding... the TH by the creek is covered in berry bushes and east webber is also covered to an obnoxious level. Though, the actual fruit was pretty sparse and didn't look like anything you'd want to eat right now.

up at the parking lot for west fork of oak creek there are berries galore! I gorged for about 20 minutes after hiking, and didnt even make a dent in the bushes.

I love the blackberries in Oak Creek Canyon, but stay away from the bushes by the road. Someone once told me that the berries near the road had high lead levels. I can't prove that, but why take a chance. If you can gather even 4 cups of berries, you can easily make freezer jam. I did, just last week.
