It's snowing on Escudilla

It's snowing on Escudilla

Postby azbackpackr » Oct 09 2006 2:42 pm

It's snowing on Escudilla today. And judging from conversations I've had with people during the course of the business day, it must be snowing on Mt. Baldy as well. It's in the 40's here in Springerville, and has been raining all day. I hear it's been pouring in Lakeside, and snowing on Humphreys Peak.

I wouldn't be surprised, however, if we were to get another warm spell before long! It usually happens that way!

First snow falls on Arizona peaks

By Chris Kline
ABC15.com

(ABC15, posted 11:54a) -- Rain turned to snow above Flagstaff and in the White Mountains on Sunday night.

About two inches fell near the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort at 9,000 feet, according to resort officials.

It's the first snow event of the season.

"After a disappointing season last winter, we certainly need this snow and we are hopeful for many more days over the next six months of this type of weather," said Snowbowl's General Manager, J.R. Murray.

"Our snow grooming equipment and shovels are ready for a work-out."

The National Weather Service is forecasting a return of El Nino to the southwest this winter. While it's unclear how strong the weather feature will be, Snowbowl received 50 percent more precipitation the last time it struck Arizona.

There's no more snow forecast in the seven-day outlook, but overnight temperatures should stay low enough for snow in the high country if more moisture arrives.

El Nino is a weather phenomenon where the temperature of the Pacific Ocean temporarily changes, affecting climate around the world.

Mrs. big_load will be pleased to hear that it snowed at least once in AZ when we weren't backpacking.

Shoot, we had some spotty light snow on the north Kaibab back in August. It didn't stick, but it was snow.
