fires and heat oh my

Postby mac5attack » May 14 2012 6:23 am

Hey all,

Alas, more problems of having a late start date. I'm in Superior now, but the forecast is not very conducive of hiking the next few days, temperatures lingering over 100. Additionally, fires in the Sunflower area have me a little concerned, and since I'm on a tight schedule in the first place, I think I'm opting to jump north and try and enjoy some cooler temps around Flagstaff. Anyone have any ideas how I can get to Flagstaff or Phoenix? (other than walking of course!)

When exactly are you looking to head north and where are you coming from? I am heading up that way mid week possibly.

With the new fire map now online, I'll mention that the Sunflower Fire has not yet crossed the trail, but I'd be surprised if it was open (not that it would be possible to hike in the smoke anyway). It is burning within 1 mile of segment #22 for a stretch of several miles, coming closest at the Mormon Grove Spring. I would expect that the trail is currently being used by firefighters extensively. Jumping ahead will probably be a good plan at this point.

Thanks all!

I've decided to abandon ship and jump off trail and head back to the PCT and get some miles out there and help the hikers and trail angels out for a while. It's been fun AZT, but maybe another time...

Late starts are hard to overcome in the AZ Heat. PCT will have nicer weather, good luck!
