Kelly Canyon is on site :)
it connects up with the origins of Pumphouse Wash

though I think you've been spoiled and would call it a yawner

Munds can only be done as an out-n-back unless you want to cross private property. CindyC's daughter's boyfriend's cousin's next door neighbor's pet groomer knows somebody there if you're really interested :D

James Canyon is probably more what you're looking for, but it does have that 40 some foot rappel. Too scarry for me :o
Hike Arizona it ROCKS!

James Cyn

Postby montezumawell » Oct 29 2003 7:28 am

When I lived in Flag in the 80's did James 4 times. Think you would like it a lot. We always started immediately BELOW the 40-ft dry falls. You drive in on the Kelly Cyn exit and pass the huge borrow pit where they dug material for road const. Maybe a quarter to a half-mile past that you pull off left on a sorta ridge crest. Snoop around and you will find a fairly obvious game trail that traverses a very steep but doable chute into James. You come out less than a quarter mile below the "falls." It's fun to go up there and hang out in the amphitheater for awhile before heading downstream. In one of the sandstone slots, we found a carved inscription from the early 1900's. I remember that there was always water in James and we had to swim or scramble around a few times. My ex-wife from that era really didn't like that hike. She hated swimming those cold, dank pools, especially in the fall when they were REALLY cold! It's a really fun, fun hike and eventually you connect with Pumphouse and have that nice hike down to Hwy 89A. The car shuttle is time-consuming, that's for certain but the hassle is well worth it.
