west fork campsite

Postby azpride » May 03 2007 12:18 pm

I've been trying to research info on the entire length of the West Fork for some time now and haven't been able to come up with anything specific. I found a triplog on this site describing where the campsites are coming from the Call o the Canyon side and relative to paces from a long pool of water or something along those lines... Basically it just confused me. The book Canyoneering Arizona didn't give much help in the write up either...

All I know is that apparently there's a good, decent sized campsite up on a ridge on the side of the canyon at somewhere around 5 or 6 miles... Does anybody know anything more specific? Any landmarks I should look for? Which side of the creek? I'm starting the trip off fr213, not call of the canyon.

And is it in bear country?

Thanks for any help. :D

The only campsite I remember coming across was probably about 5-7 miles up from the Call of Canyon side on the (East? side or right as you hike up canyon or left as you come down canyon. There were no more "swimmers" between the campsite and call of canyon as well. Here is a picture of it.

Davis, try linking your pictures again, they should work now.

My mistake, it looks like the HAZ code is killing the outside links.

Barely upstream of the "Throne Room Jr." site (pictured - which is +/- at creek level), climb up and out of the canyon on the steep use trail on creek left (right side if facing UPstream)- keep heading downstream once on top and back (eastish) toward the cliff face. You will find the alcove - if you use this alcove you needn't carry a shelter.
The "Throne Room Jr." site is decent, too. Last summer, 2006, there was someone's "kit" stashed at the Throne Room Jr.... stove, gas, pot (no, not 420)and a sleeping bag.(as shown in the photo, just behind the "Throne" I'm sitting on(Note; if starting from Woody Mtn. Rd., you'd reach this site about 1/2 the DISTANCE but 2/3 of the TIME it takes to hike the whole thing) Travel light - you'll have a better time on this hike if you do. Enjoy!

I know in hiking upstream from Call of the Canyon, several campsite areas where the "trail" climbs out of the drainage. The route is overgrown and not real obvious. I think about 4 miles in, past the area you start wading and the end of the easy trail. It would be on the right LUC ( looking up canyon).

too bad tho, you cant camp within 6 miles of Call 'O Canyon due to environmental concerns. At least thats how it always has been in the past. BUT, as of late there is no mention of such a rule on the Coconino nat'l forest website. So it looks like you can now camp at any point along the creek. However, please note that ANY campfire is strictly prohibited in the entire West Fork canyon, despite the fire ring you see in the pics. Some people just dont obey the law no matter how important it might be. I for one dont start fires where they are not allowed.
