Postby dprouty » May 21 2008 10:43 pm

I'm heading to Flagstaff to do some hicking for 4 days and I'm hoping someone can recoomend some other trails besides the inner basin and water line trail around the Humphreys area!

Thanks

You're in luck, the place is loaded with hicks!

IMO there's nothing better than Humphrey's Peak via Inner Basin. Most turn around before the fun begins where you go through the colored layers of volcanic rock.

Weatherford is a great long option for that area. Abineau is a nice shorter hike.

Personally I wouldn't hike any of those trails for another month.

Bear Jaw was in much better shape than Abineau last summer. Abineau had lots of fallen trees, and the trail was pretty torn up. You can do it, but it won't be nearly as fun as Bear Jaw. Kachina might actually be your best bet on the peaks because it's on the south side. BTW it looks like it's snowing up there right now!

I did the loop on October 2nd. Abineau was cleared of all avalanche debris and flagged in the area of concern. No clue how either faired after the intense winter snowfall. One of several reasons I'd wait another month.

If dprouty is looking for open views, Abineau is the ticket. If the desire is a more enclosed forest like the lower part of Humphrey's Summit Trail then Bear Jaw is the ticket. Might as well do the loop. They're all nice trails, Kachina just doesn't leave me begging to come back.
