It's okay Kim, like Olesma says part of the problem is this media.

My common sense remard was not directly aimed at you personally and it was not intended to sting. I was speaking in the third person.

Just as you are passionate about the wilderness, so are we all. No one here is a trasher and a looter and we all have our passionate opinions just as you do. Throw out a strong opinion like you did and you are going to get some back. I have a strong opinion on skills and being prepared to use them.

So stick around and get to know us all and we will get to know you which I can tell by your postings will be very worthwhile. You will fit in. Everyone else is an originial thinker here too. I welcome your viewpoint. You may be asked to qualify it sometimes.

BTW you probably already know this but Four Peaks are 2 billion year old precambrian rock. When you walk there, you are walking through some of the most ancient places on earth.

Phew! I sure am glad this one ended quickly. Nothing like the ' Forest service closure' topic. That was ruthless. Kim, you need to take everything in stride here. We've all had our moments. Just two weeks ago I was letting Olesma make me feel like I was 5 again and had just been caught with my hand in the cookie jar because I asked if anyone knew if the berries were ready on the rim. I'm not sure if you can still access the 'forest service closures' anymore but if you can you will see that there are so many opinions and experiences here. That is what makes this site so special to me. There is so much we can learn from each other.

I rarely build a fire when backpacking. I take along my whisperlite for cooking and appropriate gear for warmth. When I do build a fire, I make sure I take the time to erase it. Instead of piling up rocks, I dig a fire pit. When the fire is out, the ashes get buried and unused fuel is scattered as far as I can throw it.

Couple of thoughts here....

This seems to be a reoccuring theme, that of responsiblity. There is nothing wrong with backcountry camp fires if the users are responsible (1) creating the fire (2) maintaining and controlling it (3) extinguishing and cleaning up. But like the forest closure issue, the least responsible are the most visible. :cry:

I've never found the need for a fire in the backcountry, but almost always have one when car camping...just personal preferrance..

As for the issue of being a turd in the punch bowl...if that is your choice, be the turd, be the turd with pride, be the best damn turd you can be, just don't get upset if people don't like their punch with a turd in it. This place is fun, let's keep it that way.

Turd in the punchbowl...I like that one.... :lol:

I agree with everything you said - about responsibility and being the proverbial turd. But..."Pumpkin" turd? What is that all about. Funny as hell - but I've never heard the expression before. Man - the things you pick up around here... :lol:

Sorry if I sounded patronizing Cindy. But you bring up a good example of taking it all in stride. I had no idea I had offended.

I was ying to bring up a point that perhaps nobody had thought of, but one I was familiar with. I used to hike in an area that had a number of bears and there had been a mauling that summer. There was a big debate amongst the rangers as to whether or not we should clear the berries around the camping areas and trails - the final consensus was that it would be a lot of wasted effort. But it was a lively and interesting discussion.

You need to let me know if I offend sooner next time. 2 weeks before I can appologize is just too long.

I don't enjoy being the "Pumpkin Turd" - but I find myself in that role more often than I like. Oh, well. I keep trying and my wife is working on me as well. Perhaps I'll learn one of these days.

I found out yesterday that Canyon Creek area by Young raod is closed due the the dangers of flash flooding. So if that's you destination, you had better find a new spot

Currently I have five daughters living at home, ranging in age from 6 to 25 and three grandchildren ages 2, 4 and 6. All of this in my modest 1450 sq ft abode. It ain't the 'Music of the Spheres' here! I NEED A DOSE NOW; tie me off and cook it up :lol:
