White Tank Mountain High Point?

Postby Patrick L » Jun 08 2010 4:57 pm

I've always thought the peak with the large amount of antennas was the highest point in the range, but after checking out the summit post page, there seems to be another peak that's some 70ft+ taller. Am I the only one who hasn't noticed this? Has anyone hiked it before?

I've done the radio summit, I never realized there was a taller one. If I remember right, there are towers on that one too, but not as many. It looks like you could get to it by either taking the Goat Camp trail and going cross country, or following the road from the Radio Summit track.

Why jump when you could just climb a tower?

You can't tell it's higher until you get up there. Here is my route to the radio towers : http://www.hikearizona.com/location_g.p ... 112.578947 you could take the road over to them or just off trail it by staying on goat camp trail a little further and then cut over to it.

Not sure how accurate Google maps is, but it looks like it's about two and a half miles if you take the road. Seems like a good side trip if you should find yourself atop the radio summit or vice versa.

Need a little more experience in the off-trail department before I can go after this one... Or two. :|

The scramble off Goat Camp trail to the Radio summit is not that bad at all. Either download the GPS Track from this site, or follow the Rocks w/ Blue dots on the way up.

Unfortunately I don't have a GPS unit. The route looks pretty self-explanatory though. Last time I checked it out in person, I couldn't really see where to start off-trail because the vegetation seemed thick. If there was any kind of faint trail, I completely missed it. My rushing and the thought of snakes led to my inevitable turn around. Such pathetic excuses haha.

Pretty slim chance of seeing a snake up on a dry ridge.
They don't eat people either, you're not in their diet.

Yeah, I understand that. I should fear cholla more than snakes. In the couple encounters I've had, they've all just scurried away, but it's usually a little startling. That's the only issue.
Back to the previous topic though, the vegetation is ultimately what did me in. Any "advice" on that?

It's been nearly ten years since I've hiked that area. What's the vegetation?

I don't remember it too well; it's been a month or two. I just remember thinking I couldn't get through it.

Vegetation is no issue what so ever. If you don't have a GPS, just print out one of the tracks from the site.
Here's mine from March of this year. http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?GPS=8914.

Once you find the place to start up the hill, you will pick up Blue Dots painted on rocks taking you to the top. If you need a more detailed TOPO map. let me know and I can throw one together for you.

About a month ago, my son and I did Goat Camp with intention of detouring to the Radio Summit. Being first-timers on that trail, and engrossed in conversation, we missed the off-trail as well. We backtracked and found that on the ridge with a natural lookout there was a very narrow trail that we followed for a little while, but it was getting late in the day and was getting warm. When we overlay-ed our GPS tracks, we were assured that we were on the right one. Maybe in the cooler months, we will go back.

I was using the default route before. I'll use yours whenever I'm back up there.
Kind of anxious to give it another shot now.
