Hiker missing - left Flagstaff 6/27/10 for Yuma

Man on coast-to-coast hiking trip missing in AZ
The Associated Press Posted: 07/03/2010 01:29:25 PM PDT

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—A man on a cross-country hiking trip from Florida to San Diego to raise money for cancer research has gone missing in Arizona.
Police say Salvatore Pascarelli of Brooksville, Fla. last talked to his girlfriend on June 27. He told her he was leaving Flagstaff in northern Arizona the next day and heading to Yuma, which is on the U.S.-Mexico border and on the way to San Diego.

Pascarelli, who is in his late 40s, carries a GPS locator that stopped working around 9:30 p.m. June 27. Flagstaff police also say his cell phone has either been turned off or lost power.

Pascarelli's family says he's kept in regular contact since he began his journey and that it's extremely strange they haven't heard from him.

Heard about this on the news. Hopefully he's found soon, or is just out of contact for a while. :(

Didn't some guy going cross country asking how to get to Yuma a while back?
I couldn't find it, seems like azbackpackr responded. Must be something else

Even if he did not meet with foul play, I can't think of a worse time of year to try to hike to Yuma. The only way that would have enough water is if you were walking along the Colorado River the entire distance. But you'd have to get to the river from Flag.

This initially confused me, because our local paper had a feature today on a Jersey guy hiking west to east across the US. However, he finished AZ a while ago and is now halfway across NM.

He showed up OK in Las Vegas.

7/03/2010 Update: We are happy to report that Sal has been located in Las Vegas, NV today. He is fine and doing well. During his walk, he has experienced a lot of heel pain and problems associated with his feet. Also, along his trip, he has had technical issues with his GPS. While he was in Flagstaff, he made the decision to take a bus to Las Vegas since he has relatives there, to try to give his feet some time to recuperate. His cell phone became completely disabled due to the fact that it had gotten wet while in Flagstaff, so he was unable to communicate with family and friends about the decision to first head to Las Vegas rather than Yuma, AZ. Once the phone dried out and became functional again today, he had no idea that he was reported missing. I will post on the web site when he is able to continue on his journey to San Diego. Thank you, Denise Oakes

Great news! I was worried he may have decided on the AZT route south to Yuma via our Mazatzal Wilderness..
