Ten and a half years isn't much of a lifespan. I'm glad nobody was hurt.

Darn, I thought they were going to leave it open for mud wrestling.

I wonder if anyone got pictures.
Why bother with stupid inflatable dams that have to be replaced every few years? Why not install roller gate dams that can release water on demand but still maintain the lake (though I personally think that Tempe Town Lake is silly).

A serious fish tale as Tempe Town Lake empties
The Associated Press | Posted: Thursday, July 22, 2010 8:23 am | Comments

A serious fish tale is unfolding at Tempe Town Lake. The future of 10,000 fish that until a few days ago were swimming around and waiting to be caught and now face death.

Arizona Game and Fish Department spokesman Eric Swanson tells KTVK-TV in Phoenix that most of the fish were swept downstream when one of the rubber bladders of the dam split a seam Tuesday night.

But thousands more remain behind in the drying bed that used to be Tempe Town Lake.

Swanson said they’re unable to save the remaining fish because of the high temperatures, rapidly dropping oxygen level, and the large scale and scope of the situation.

Plans are in the works to remove the dead and dying fish to reduce odor and diminish any potential health hazards.

rode my bike around the "lake" yesterday afternoon
lots of people out looking and taking pictures
not that much to see, just mud and some areas of shallow water
didn't see any fish, but they may have been in the remaining water
a few shopping carts, some pallets and at least one bicycle sticking out of the mud
was thinking about how it would feel to be kayaking on the lake when the dam broke
guess you'd get hung up on the line of buoys rather than get sucked over the concrete drop
it didn't stink much yet
shouldn't take long for the rest of it to dry up

I saw the headline today on the front of the Arizona Republic. Something about two sides blaming each other for the mishap.

Probably wont take too long to fill back up. Went by it today just a bunch of puddles really. Perfect time to go fishing!

Today the news reports are that the fish will become food for an alligator, it will help with the smell.
