Body Discovered on Colorado River in Grand Canyon

Postby hikeaz » Nov 05 2010 10:07 am

Grand Canyon, Ariz. – On Wednesday, November 3, at approximately 2:10 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report from a private river trip that they had discovered a man's body floating in the vicinity of river mile 21 on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.

Grand Canyon rangers were flown in via helicopter and arrived at the scene at approximately 4:00 p.m. They conducted initial investigations and prepared the body for transport. Due to the lateness of the hour, it was decided that rangers would stay with the body until it could be retrieved the following day.

On Thursday, November 4, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the body was retrieved via long-line operation (suspended below a helicopter) and flown to the Cliff Dweller's Air Strip near Highway 89A, north of the canyon. From there it was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's office in Flagstaff, Arizona for autopsy and identification.

Wonder if it could be that fella that jumped off the bridge...

I'd not heard.
If it was NAVAJO bridge, that would make sense.

I had already been told about this earlier today. It is that man, from what I heard. Or, at least, they think it is. Glad I wasn't on that river trip! All private and commercial boaters on the river have been told to look for the body, ever since the guy did his swan dive off the bridge. That was quite some time ago, too. But it was predicted by the rangers that once the river levels started going up and down as they normally do with dam releases that the body would pop up. They have and it did.

We were actually in Soap for 4 days while this was going on. The next morning, we had a trip of about 10 rangers (all with white rafts) come down and spent a good 45 minutes combing the shore. They never said why and it was early in the am so we wouldn't have been along the shore yet. I did find a giant dead beaver but thank God not the body. He jumped around the 29th of Sept. I'll bet after all that time, he was pretty nasty looking.

BTW IF you have Verizon, you will have service in Soap Creek. Internet too. I was really bummed that we can't "get away" anymore, but it was beautiful to tell my daughters "good night" after the end of an awesome day of fishing.
