Four Peaks road

Postby AK » May 14 2003 12:24 pm

I'm thinking of tackling Browns Peak at the end of the month and am wondering if anyone who has been there lately knows the condition of the road. I have a Honda Civic that would like to keep its oil pan.

I haven't been there lately but I do know the forest service does not maintain those roads and the tend to be pretty rough as a lot of people four wheel over them.

Good Luck

Hi AK,
A friend of mine was up there on Monday, he was driving a Daewoo sedan, I did not ask him how the road was. But, you know what they say ... Q: What is the diference between a rental car, and a 4x4 .... A: Nothing

Let me know when you are planning to go, I have several 4x4s (yes I am that guy), if you would like company hikeaz and I were talking about tackling the south two peaks. If you would like to go along for that we might be able to arrange something.

Matt,
When are you planning the two peak hike? I was planning around the 31st of this month. I don't know if I would be able to do both do to still being a little out of shape. I might be in a little over my head for browns peak but I'm still determined to climb it.

A Long and Winding Road

Postby Snick33 » May 17 2003 7:47 am

Forest Road # 143, aka Oso Road, aka Four Peaks access road is still in fine condition for most vehicles. Two door sedans can make it easily, even the dreaded section at Mud Springs has been recently graded. Low riders would be the only exception. I was on 143 last weekend.

Anybody been on the road to Four Peaks from either direction? What are the current conditions since the winter weather? Thinking about driving a car in. Thanks in advance!!

I drove it the day after Thanksgiving and it looked pretty gnarly dry. There are numerous areas where it seems it would be impossible not to bottom out in a car. But about 3/4 of the way up we saw a Saturn, so go figure. With the wet weather, I wouldn't even think of taking a car up there along the west side.

If you can see snow up there from the valley (and you can) I can assure you that taking a car up there will be futile.

The road gets driven on by 4x4 trucks, which packs it down and gets it rutty. (And some 4x4s don't make it either: http://www.hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=119166) Then it softens during warm sunny days. Then it freezes overnight. So you will encounter icy ruts and/or packed wet snow and also some mud.

But if you do try it Dave, make sure you take a camera.
