Camping in zion

Postby krispykritter » Jun 26 2011 10:50 am

I'am planning a trip to Zoin in october with the family. We like to camp so I'am trying to find the best places. We would also consider cabins. The 2 parks that are in the park dont look that great ( as per you tube ). Are they better then they look on tv? Are there any others? Where your favorite place to stay in Zion area?

I went to Springdale and got a room. The camping I saw was at the visitor center, smoky, mildly crowded, and in a fairly busy area to be camping.
I think Monsoon season will begin around June 20, plus or minus 5 days, not by the calendar according to the NWS, but when dew points rise dramatically, and it begins to rain over the Sacramento Mountains. It will start about 10 days later in Arizona.

There are two camping areas in the park. South Campground is first come-first served. Watchman is the other (reservation only). Both generally have a picnic table, a fire pit, and room for two tents. Neither give you that much privacy. Both use the communal bathroom shared by about 40 campsites per bathroom. No showers in either.

I generally don't care that much about camping - Zion trips are active all day, short on sleep. I hike early to late, eat dinner, and crash. If you don't camp much, a hotel would be a much better choice.

We are going with the kids so hiking all day may not work that well. If it was just me i could sleep anywhere. We plan on staying on the shorter trails, splashing in the water. We dont mind camping but we usualy dont stay in campgrounds. I'am going to look at hotels, cabins, resorts ect.

I stayed at Watchman campground when I was there in 2007....I am NOT a campground person! It was too busy and too noisy. We had our fair share of "party people" who were up half the night (keeping our whole section up as well) and then what campground wouldn't be complete without the "midnight arrivals"? Banging their gear around, slamming their car doors every time they retrieved one item and had their propane lantern so bright, I thought it might be a solar flare!

I'd recommend a hotel or cabin in Springdale and there are shuttles that leave from there at regular intervals.

Have a great trip!

Reasonably ~ 100-120$ priced accomodations . Large rooms. Central location. Bus stop at the street!
Have stayed here a few times and it has worked out OK

If you want one (or a few) nights of camping and don't mind not being in the main canyon, I highly recommend Lava Point camp ground. Only 6 sights, free, first come - first served. Never had a bad experience there, since it is more out of the way than the 2 huge camp grounds in the main canyon. Also, it's at higher elevation, so cooler.

+1 to Lava Point. Plus there are Condors there!
