Glad I live in AZ! :sl:

Thousands in Portland take to bikes for naked ride
By Dan Cook – Sun Jun 19, 1:57 am ET
PORTLAND, Ore (Reuters) – It was a typical early summer evening in Portland: cloudy skies threatening rain, temperatures in the mid-60s, and thousands of naked bicyclists gathered near the city's waterfront for a clothing-free night ride.
The Portland version of the World Naked Bike Ride was about to begin.
"It is the most liberating, natural feeling possible," said Brooklyn Jay, who came all the way from Phoenix for the ride.
World Naked Bike Ride is a globally observed event among hard-core bikers designed, at least ostensibly, to promote the use of the bicycle for transportation. But Portland cyclists have been especially adamant about making it another of the Pacific Northwest city's quirky traditions.
"This is just a way of drawing attention to the need to be more green and replace fossil fuels with natural power," said Ken Johnson, who was completely nude and body-painted grey.
"I am going all the way" nude, said Xandi Silvaggi, adding, "it is all about saving the environment."
Since the World Naked Bike Ride started in 2004, only four other cities -- San Francisco, Seattle, and Boulder and Black Rock City in Colorado -- have celebrated it every year.
The Portland nudist/cyclists have turned the event into a festival, with a pre-ride event and post-ride parties featuring both clothed and naked partying which lasts well into the night.
They even have an official and rather corporate sponsor: Bridgeport Brewing, maker of Portland's first craft beer.
The local group that sponsors the event, SHIFT, describes itself as "a loose-knit and informal bunch of bike-loving folks."
The purpose of the naked rides, SHIFT says, is "a light-hearted protest against fossil fuel. ... A comment on the vulnerability of cyclists. Choose your message, ride with us! As bare as you dare."
Portland Police don't arrest the naked riders. They cite the city's extremely tolerant public indecency code as permitting such activities as mass nude cycling.

Oh so it's kind of like driving on the freeway, as long as everyone goes twenty miles over the speed limit it's okay :-k

Dang! Now that sounds like fun! :D But why not do it in a warm place, such as Tucson or Phoenix? :D

Yep, found it. Village Voice: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninsca ... bowery.php
Is there anything out there, or is it just more of the same?

Ironically, if everyone wanted to hike naked, I would probably suck-it-up never complain. Fortunately, the opposite is the case!! :D

I think they do their bike ride in the summer when it's too hot in Tucson or Phoenix. There is a "No Pants" day on the METRO Light Rail. It's sort of a flash mob thing and I don't get invited because I don't have one of those flash mob thingy phones. :sl: That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

And thus, the invention of the loin clothe did follow.

The sad assumption played out there, as well. "Because you are against running into naked people while out hiking you must, therefore, be conservative or unenlightened." I'm neither, I just don't want to hike around naked people!! :wrt: ;)

Who said that about conservative and unenlightened? I've met some "Conservative" naturists. They tried to convert me to vote for Ron Paul. I just think you are "clothes minded" :)

Look at the caption under the image accompanying the story...it talks about the community being "Conservative."

Ooops. You are quick. I went back to make a gratuitous reference to Ron Paul and you had already commented. :o I figure this topic is already red hot so why not add some politics. :o

A community that didn't give women the right to vote until 1990 - that's not "Conservative", that is "Neanderthal". Makes sense that a community like that would ban naturist hikers. And this defendant was apparently a jerk. Conservatives get enough of a bum rap without being equated with this Canton. Or maybe my definition of Conservative just includes more of a Libertarian flavor.

I wonder if there's a published record for the longest-living forum thread. I've enjoyed this one for over 8 years, and it's seldom disappointing.

The Portland thing does sound like fun, and there's strength and anonymity in numbers.

Those of us that actually DO hike nude on a regular basis aren't in the newspapers because we choose not to be. We're far from streets, and avoid the active horse trails during their active hours. The AZ definition of indecent exposure has the word "reckless" in it, and we're anything but that. The only people that know we're enjoying the comfort, freedom, and a feeling of rebellion are the friends and family that join us on our "hikes". (quotes because most of you would call what we do "walks")

I wish you all a wonderful and stress-free holiday! If you don't hike nude, at least go out and soak up the sun in your yard or on your patio. The vitamin D will protect you from seasonal flu and colds.

My best holiday wishes to all that share the love of our unparalleled Arizona outdoors!
