I always thought that I would choke out adrift in space. Eventually my body would hit something cool. Who knows maybe my microbes would start a whole new race or religion. Something akin to "The Gods Must Be Crazy" (If anybody remembers that movie).

To get away from the whole touchy religion aspect of it, isn't the more immediate issue that this is illegal? Shouldn't that pretty much end the discussion and put into perspective that this is just simply wrong for that fact alone? I've been hearing the phrase "what part of the word 'illegal' don't you understand" on the immigration issue for years now. Seems like that simpler line of logic is appropriate here.

Unfortunately, we have a well-established history of skirting rules in order to placate people in times of emotional duress. Example #1 in Arizona is waiving the 5-year waiting period to rename geographical locations as a memorial to somebody. If the government can bypass it's own rule and rename an entire mountain, why would anybody else expect that they can't bypass a rule and put up a small cross somewhere?

Well that's the key issue on that argument. If the government or politician does it, it's (almost) by definition not illegal. Waiving a rule is not breaking a law (not that I like the nature of that issue, but it is what it is). If a private citizen is making a memorial, it is not that they simply

bypass a rule

, they are breaking the law. If a ranger catches someone doing that and they get a citation, I don't think the argument "But officer, I'm only bypassing that rule" will be a convincing argument. I bypass the rule regarding speeding every time I drive, but the police don't recognize my private authority on that subject.
