Litttle Saddle mt. Tom Thumb(the McDowells) McDowell park

Postby GeorgAZ » Nov 24 2002 2:51 pm

Does anyone know how to get to Little Saddle Mountain, now that #87 is divided?? We used to park on the side by the creek and can't figure out how to get there now. Any info on the McDowells or Tom Thumb? Pinnacle Peak trail?? Anyone interested in one of these kinda local hikes on Monday? I've never even done Usery Pass.Open for something a little bit away from the pollution! I could go up the Flatiron, but with the latest knee thing, would never make it down! Oh,the battle of the body parts!

It's still there. If you've got a GPSR I've included waypoints in brackets [] (UTM coordinates).

Drive north from Sunflower 4.7 miles on the "new" Route 87 where you'll find an intersection with a sign pointing to Mt. Ord/ FR 626 going east and FR 627 going west [12S 457904 E 3753554 N].

Turn west onto FR627 (it's all pavement) and drive 3.5 miles to the tiny creek-side parking lot [12S 455283 E 455283 N] you remember.

A bit of Trivia: After driving 1.3 miles on FR627 you join the "old" State Rt 87 [12S 457116 E 3754611 N]. If you look north here (to your right) you'll see the ground-up remains of the old 87 (now called FR 201). Continue on the paved FR627 to the creek-side parking lot.

Very good and accurate directions. One of my favorite trails to nighthike. Sometimes I would observe a bear in the trashcan at the small parking lot.

I'm looking to do a hike on Monday! I'm planning on something in the Supes, but basically I just want to go anywhere where there's some water running or laying around.

First Water is one of a few I'm considering, too. What trail, specifically?
