Terrapene carolina

Common Names:Box Turtle
Habitat:Wet forest areas, wet meadows and floodplains. From Maine south to the Florida Keys, stretching west to Kansas and Oklahoma, south into most of Texas.
Description:Carapace highly domed. Dark brown, olive, orange or yellow with some pattern, dark blotching or totally patternless. Red eyes on males, yellow/brown eyes on females. Lower shell is hinged allowing it to close tightly against carapace.
Comments:One of the few turtles with highly patterned, contrasting shells.
