Cysteodemus armatus

Common Names:Inflated Beetle, Blister Beetle
Habitat:Desert environments in California, Arizona and Nevada. Larva have been found in subterranean Bee nests.
Description:Flightless Black Beetle with an inflated air sac (spheroid) and fused Elytra. The Elytra is coarse and pitted and covered in white, yellow or green secretions.
Comments:The blister beetle genus Epicauta is highly toxic to horses. A few beetles consumed in a single feeding of alfalfa hay may be lethal. Poisonings have also been reported after use of "Spanish fly"-type folk medicines, and after handling blister beetle individuals. The toxic chemical is cantharidin.
