An avalanche or snow slide, for the purposes of this label, is a path, slide, or evidence of the avalanche, captured in an image. Damage from the slide, even in summer, is considered suitable.

Avalanches occur when snow that has built up on an unstable slope releases and moves downward, usually in a defined path. Slides occur both when a new snow pack falls on a slope suitable for sliding and the new pack does so, or when wind loaded slopes release, usually after a storm passes. Some purists say the damage is actually from the wind force ahead of the snow, not the snow itself.

The San Francisco Peaks in Arizona have numerous slide paths, some stable, and some which have produced large slides in the last decade. More common ones and ones that can be seen from trails are the Allison Clay off of the Humphrey Trail, Philomena path (where Philomena Springs is located) and the Abineau Canyon path on the north side of Humphrey and typically observed from the trail of the same name. It is not recommended to cross these, or other paths in winter after storms have deposited accumulations of snow.
