Coragyps atratus

Habitat:Resident of Southern AZ, Mexico, and Texas, extending into the lower Midwest, Southeast and Mid Atlantic States. Open Country, rarely seen in woodland areas.

Description:Large Black bird with Gray head and White patch near each Wing Tip. Short Tail and more roundish Wings than a Turkey Vulture. Will "flap" more frequently for this reason.

Comments:Unlike Turkey Vultures, Black Vultures rely only on their vision to find food. Will congregate in groups and are more aggressive, driving Turkey Vultures away from food. Primarily carrion eaters, but will take small sick birds as Prey as well.
