Common Names:Box Turtle

Habitat:Southeastern AZ, between the Elevations of 2000' to over 7100'. Valleys, Grasslands and shallow Canyons and Washes.

Description:High Dome-shaped Shell with radiating Yellow lines on a Dark Shell. Older Turtles lose the lines and the Shell becomes plain. Males have Red/Orange Eyes, Females have Orange/Brown or Yellow Eyes. The Bottom of the Shell is hinged and closes around the Turtle like a Box.

Comments:Very slow moving Turtle. Not commonly seen as they are not numerous, due to high Road Fatalities and people picking up them up and taking them home as Pets. They can live to be 30 years old. It is illegal to collect this Animal or harass it in any way.
